Season 3 Episode 6—the “mid-season premiere”—kicked off the “Virtual World Arc”, something I wanted to do back on Season 2 Episode 6 when they rescued Eri, but there wasn’t time due to the players wanting to run from the Dai Li Hero Force. This resulted in me having to put off this “video game arc”, but now I found a chance to do the arc and that was awesome! Let’s dive into what happened.
Baxter virtualized K-Krew into Eri Menos’ mind, where they landed in a Forest Sector. They immediately encountered Data XerX, a data-mined clone of the original XerX created to protect Eri from the virus lurking in her subconscious. Data XerX initially didn’t want to help K-Krew wake her up, but K-Krew convinced him to be their escort to the tower at the very least. Data XerX and WIFI got into a fight since he shot the player with an arrow, but they decided to keep the peace for the time being.
Once at the tower, they learned about the different Eris being broken apart and staying in different sectors. There were 4 sectors protected by an Enforcer. Data XerX, Data Menos, Data Kai-tick, and Data Bubbly were Eri’s creations and protectors. K-Krew found she wasn’t speaking correctly either, having decided to enlist Data Menos’ help in saving Eri from this virus keeping her asleep. In order to wake her up, all four Eri Data fragments, all the Eris have to be in their towers to converge.
Now armed with the plan, K-Krew jumped into action. They traveled to Menos Kingdom where they found countless faceless people walking around. Gundam tried to talk to them while Data XerX and WIFI got into a big fight. WIFI was pissed that Data XerX called him stupid and attacked, causing a battle to break out. While Killion flew away from the conflict, he ran into Data Menos and fanboyed over his arrival.
Data Menos—on his trusty horse Axel—attacked WIFI with a NAT 20 Broadsword swing, inflicting more damage with his signature DIVINE SMITE! WIFI almost died as a result, but he pretended that it didn’t hurt him that much. Menos had less than 5 HP remaining, but Menos commended him for even surviving one of his deadly assaults. After clearing up this misunderstanding, Menos decided to take them all to his Eri Menos living in his castle. This version was Data pregnant with their unborn child.
Pregnant Eri Menos was willing to wake up her true self as long as the other fragments were in agreement. K-Krew traveled to Data Kai-tick territory next with Data Menos accompanying them. While Data XerX returned to the Forest Sector to protect his broken Eri, Data Menos asked Data Kenji to watch over his kingdom. Killion was excited to have Data Menos join their party, pretending he was the real one. Data Menos allowed Killion to ride his horse, Axel.
K-Krew and Data Menos arrived in Data Kai-tick’s Sector, an eternal night. They are immediately ambushed by Lost Boys who want to protect their daddy. Gundam and Killion were attacked by the enemies’ arrows, but WIFI and Data Menos jumped out of the way. Gundam managed to convince them to play “hunter”, so the enemy children can chase them down. The Lost Boys agreed and dispersed, giving them a 30 second head start. Data Menos said the jokes on them because they will be the hunters. K-Krew were in awe of how great Menos was.
While K-Krew hid themselves, Data Menos sauntered out in the open and slaughtered the first six kids who tried to attack him. Killion killed the rest with a Fireball, leaving one kid for questioning. The little kid took K-Krew and Data Menos to daddy.
While traveling on a boat to the second island—Skull Cave—Data Menos and Gundam fought each other to see “What it means to become a hero”. They fought hard against each other, ending the brief scuffle with Data Menos declaring Gundam “the strongest” among K-Krew. Gundam already knew that, but appreciated Data Menos saying that. Killion turned invisible, wanting to avoid head-on battle with his idol.
When they arrived on Skull Cave Island, they encountered a brand-new enemy; someone that made Killion and WIFI want to run away. Data Kai-tick was no longer a pure entity, but he was corrupted with Data Lord Eggza, forcing a merger into a Chimera known as “KAI-ZA”, an Aarakocra with two heads and four wings. Killion stayed invisible and shot off kryptonite swords. Gundam fired a couple kryptonite bullets. WIFI ran the other way.
However, Kai-Za proved too strong for these initial attacks. The “Kai-tick” part of this Chimera Fusion managed to deflect kryptonite, making the weakness harder to exploit as a result. Kai-Za also knocked out Killion—0 HP—with one punch. Gundam activated his Almighty Battlizer and Data Menos transformed into the Paladin of White Dragon.
Data Menos attacked Kai-Za using a Burst Stream of Destruction Dragon Breath Attack alongside his BBC Spear, making Kai-Za roll a NAT 1 on a DEX Save. Then Kai-Za countered with a two-headed mouth breathing attack, forcing Data Menos to roll a NAT 1 too. The damage on both sides was terrifying. Killion admired—upon waking up—and recorded his hero on his smartphone. Data Menos and Draxel—Axel evolved—crashed down on the surface.
WIFI decided to rejoin the battle and borrowed Draxel to gain flying power against Kai-Za. This led to a combo assault—Menos and WIFI teamed up—against Kai-Za’s high Armor Class. WIFI unleashed his Breath of the Carrot—a technique he learned from episode 3 and mastered—against Kai-Za while Data Menos unleashed his BBC Spear and Divine Smites.
In the end, Data Menos and WIFI used everything they had to defeat Kai-Za. WIFI ended up splitting the Chimera in half. Gundam helped from afar using Energy Slashes. Killion stopped being invisible due to him only having one hit point left. Kai-Za was slayed. After this, everyone took a long rest outside the cave. The kids returned somehow and offered to keep watch for their daddy. Kai-tick’s half was still alive, offering K-Krew and Menos a warning about the dangers inside Skull Cave.
Once the morning passed and everyone rested up, K-Krew and Data Menos entered Skull Cave. Immediately, they encountered Eggza Jr. and were given a challenge. They had to make him laugh in order to save Eri. He preferred not to fight and wanted to get a good laugh in. Everyone struggled to make a good impression, but eventually they did it and found Eri hurt and wounded.
K-Krew and Data Menos also discovered she was directly infected with the virus. Gundam Data Drained the virus out, but WIFI wanted to try popping it into his Omni-Blade arm. This attempt resulted in the virus infecting the arm, and Gundam needing to hit it with an ice bullet. This Eri was grateful for the help, but she didn’t think they needed to go to such extremes. Menos carried his wife after she collapsed and asked her where the tower was.
Eri informed them that the tower was on the other side of this cavern, but it was being guarded by the Data Ginyu Force. Data Menos offered to hold them off while K-Krew got Eri Menos to the tower for safekeeping. This action sequence was pretty awesome. Data Menos transformed into the Paladin of White Dragon and battled the Data Ginyu Force head-on. K-Krew had to duck KI Blasts being blasted at them, and Eri tripped on the way to the tower, but everyone—including Data Menos with a NAT 20—escaped!
Everyone made it into the tower. However, they were also trapped inside due to the tower detecting the virus inside the Omni-blade arm. The tower activated lockdown. K-Krew, Data Menos, and Eri took advantage and took a long rest to recover from the earlier fights. Then Gundam and WIFI worked together to disinfect the Omni-Blade arm successfully. After they finished this work up, K-Krew and Data Menos prepared to head down to Data Bubby’s territory for that Eri Menos.
The session ended there. What a wild adventure these past couple sessions were. I’m excited to see what happens next with Eri Menos and how that will factor into saving Mas O from Ninth Hell.
Having Menos back—even if it’s just a Data version—was so much fun. He might be sticking around for a while! He was incredibly useful for the players to have in this session, and they agreed with his great hero philosophy. Episode 7 will be quite explosive with what I have in mind. Thank you so much for reading my D&D HERO Campaign adventures so far!
