This Is Us Season 5 Episode 7 “There” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
This Is Us is back… for the third time since season 5 premiered. The show needs to stop taking so many breaks. Anyway, I got around to watching the latest episode, “There”. I had a great time with Kevin navigating what’s most important to him, and how being there for his kids is more important than his career. After five seasons, Kevin figured it out - “What would Jack Pearson do?”
Picking up where we left off in “Birth Mother”, Kevin is on his way to Madison because she is in labor. Kevin bailed on the movie and realized what really matters to him—his kids. It made me weep seeing Kevin drive quick and getting in touch with Miguel and Rebecca to get a plane ticket. Kevin was putting out all the stops to reach the birth. He does not want to miss it—he refuses because he’ll break if he does.
The B-Plot with Jack and Young Kevin paralleled well with Kevin’s present-day journey to fatherhood because he put Jack on a pedestal. I enjoyed this B-Plot because Young Kevin is still feeling so much pressure from Jack, not wanting to disappoint him at this Football Camp. When Jack hears Young Kevin saying his truth and that the coach calls him stupid, Jack is reminded of his own father and little league experience, which leads to the C-Plot.
I did enjoy the father-son focus, which came directly after the mother-son episode with Randall and Laurel. If it weren’t for the constant hiatuses, the pattern would’ve came off stronger. The cliffhanger with Kevin being unable to board the plane because he left his wallet behind at the car accident, which held his ID. Without an ID, Kevin can’t board the plane. What happens now?
Well, Beth and Randall do appear with a family save. They call Madison to comfort her because she is family now. Wow. Madison. Is. Family. I would have never seen that one coming from a mile away. I’m excited for tomorrow’s episode. For some weird reason, I was bothered by how nameless the car accident victim was. I want to learn more about his character in the near future. I hope he makes it out alive.
Thanks for reading this episode review, everyone! Who else is hyped for a new episode tomorrow?
