Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 12 “Lilymon Blossoms” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
With Tai and Matt getting their Ultimate Digimon in the last two episodes, it was time for the other DigiDestined to get some well-deserved screen time. This episode focused on Mimi and Palmon, picking up where we left off in the previous episode’s cliffhanger when they fell down the hole. Tai and Izzy screamed her name down the hole, but Mimi and Palmon decided to find another way out of their predicament. Along the way, we learn more about Mimi’s character and her sincerity for life.
Andromon is the Digimon villain for this episode, having been awakened to kill Mimi and Palmon under the Soundbirdmon’s influence. A Guardromon was able to rescue Mimi and Palmon in time, repaying the kindness she showed earlier—clearing the dust off him out of respect—when she came across his “dead robot body”. I appreciated the reboot for showing this side of Mimi’s character so early on. If y’all don’t know or remember, the original series’ Mimi hated fighting because so many Digimon friends—like Leomon and Whamon—died, and she hated that so much death occurred.
The only negative was how Tai and Agumon almost stole the spotlight when they digivolved into MetalGreymon—which is awesome, don’t get wrong—but at least they didn’t end up saving Mimi. She can definitely rescue herself without the boys, but she wasn’t able to save Guardromon, who died protecting her from Andromon’s attack.
Mimi cried and declared that she’ll never forgive Andromon for what he did to Guardromon, triggering Togemon to digivolve further into Lilymon. This character moment demonstrated how nice and caring she is at heart, but she is also able to become fierce and strong-willed for the sake of others. I also enjoyed the color contrast—Mimi and Palmon’s evolutions were bright while the machine ruins were cold and dark—that was in this episode too.
Honestly, I was surprised how this episode was structured when it came time for Lilymon’s debut. Mimi had great character development. Tai and Izzy didn’t have to rescue her nor did MetalGreymon do most of the hero work. MetalGreymon was mostly there to keep the machinery rumble from falling on everyone. I’m excited for next week’s Sora-centric episode for Garudamon! Girl Power! Let’s keep that going!
Thanks for reading this episode review, everyone! I’ll see you all next week!
