This latest episode was outstanding! The animation on Greymon’s super evolution to MetalGreymon was phenomenal. There was decent build-up to that moment, and even when it came, I still found myself surprised that the super evolution actually happened. The flashback to my childhood when this digivolution happened in the original series’ 20th episode was too surreal.

While the ability to digivolve into Ultimate might bother most original fans, I found the change-up exciting due to implication that Devimon will be on par with Ultimate-level Digimon. Also, Digimon Tamers already played with this concept when they allowed Guilmon to reach the Ultimate form around episode 14. In addition, everyone else will be getting their Ultimate forms in the coming episodes. I wanted to clear the air about that controversy before diving into everything else regarding the episode review.

The balance between the DigiDestined regrouping in a cave and figuring out their next move was typical group planning. I missed the quiet moments when they would plan out their moves, so having them working out a plan to escape MetalTyrannomon was necessary. Also, Tai and Agumon offering themselves up as bait was a classic move on their end. Knowing the other DigiDestined are getting their Ultimate moments in the upcoming episodes helped calm my negativity toward Tai and Matt’s favoritism.

The ending to the episode showed the DigiDestined being split into two groups, wanting to search alternative ways around an evil barrier that prevented them from going straight ahead to where the Holy Digimon are being held captive. A classic Digimon storytelling trope—split the party—to give each child more dedicated screen time and character development.
