Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 11 “The Wolf Standing Atop the Desert” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Last episode showed us the amazing MetalGreymon. This latest episode gave us WereGarurumon and more context—more accurately, rebooted context—on Matt’s loner status. While I thought Matt’s back and forth about “doing things alone” to “being a team player” was annoying, at least we learned—officially—why he was acting this way. He wanted to finish the Digimon mission as soon as possible so he can go back home and protect his little brother, T.K.
The episode also used that familial connection to remind us that the Human World was still in trouble, which made Matt’s reasoning to abandon the refuge Digimon feel less heartless. It was still pretty damn heartless, but Matt simply cared for his little brother and the Human World more. Without that context though—something Gabumon pointed out in the episode—Sora and Joe couldn’t understand Matt’s refusal to help.
While Tai, Izzy, and Mimi were journeying fine without issues, Matt, Sora, and Joe had trouble with Scorpiomon, an Ultimate-level Digimon that was blocking their path and killing innocent Digimon that tried to pass through. Matt, Sora, and Joe also met some refuge Digimon trying to find safe passage so they can meet up with Leomon, the leader of a Digimon resistance. I loved the foreshadowing this episode was giving us with Leomon and TK being mentioned.
Of course, the animation was amazing for WereGarurumon, but MetalGreymon’s was clearly the superior one. WereGarurumon’s fight scene against Scorpiomon was incredible, with the reboot having a bigger focus on WereGarurumon’s hand-to-hand combat skills. I had a good time watching that fight.
The only negative I had about the episode is Sora and Piyomon being treated less. Based on the episodes since Sora appeared, she has the potential to become an amazing character with her willingness to help others and badass scenes with Birdramon. Maybe the situation will be fixed once her “Ultimate episode” comes around. Based on the episode’s cliffhanger and next week’s preview, we’re getting Lilymon next!
