Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 27 “To The New Continent” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Episode 27—“To The New Continent”—brought all eight DigiDestined together. Kari, following the instruction of an unknown voice, summoned the B-Plot DigiDestined to where Tai, Matt, and TK were to save them. This latest episode had a lot of stuff going on with both character and plot, but we really needed a fast pace episode after a few bad episodes. I did like how everyone had a moment to catch up with each other regarding the plot, and the animation was beautiful. This episode had a few bad spots, but then there were super good moments especially when everyone went ultimate.
How the episode handled the digivolution sequences was brilliant. The Digimon Writers did what I wanted them to do with the special digivolution orbs. It’s faster and it makes everyone feel like equals. Watching all of them fight together against a Cordramon was beautiful.
The “Kill Leomon” trope happened in this episode too. He sacrificed himself to give the DigiDestined their chance to reach the new continent. Leomon, his Digi-Squad, and Eldradimon disappeared into a huge black vortex that appeared in the ocean. So, they might honestly come back to the series at some point, but for now, they are presumed dead. Even if Leomon did survive and comes back stronger, he’ll likely still die since killing Leomon is such a solid trope.
The ending with DarkKnightmon was unexpected. I loved how DarkKnightmon came back so early to finish the DigiDestined off, and right after the DigiDestined already defeated Cordramon. In some of my earlier episode reviews, I mentioned TK was the bravest kid ever, and this fact is still holding up. TK stepped up to protect the others because he and Patamon didn’t participate in the previous fight.
TK whipped out his Digivice and digivolved Patamon into Angemon. The digivolution sequence into Angemon was heavenly. The animation was incredible, and it was an effective cliffhanger. I was hyped to watch Angemon versus DarkKnightmon. Next week’s promo showed everyone getting separated again too, but at least it’s part of a survival game scenario where they have to meet up again or die trying.
Honestly, I was losing my patience with Digimon Adventure Reboot for a while, but this episode gave me some much-needed hope for the rest of the series. The series truly does shine when all the DigiDestined are together, but separating them and bringing them back together for the final fights seems like the route the writers want to take. I think I can make peace with that. I had to make peace with something similar happening with my One Piece manga reading.
Kari’s role in the series is currently unclear. She has no Digivice or Gatomon yet, but she kept sharing looks with TK throughout the episode. I think the Writers are planning to explore some connection with TK and Kari moving forward in the series, which is a good thing because their friendship is one of the best ones in Digimon Adventure. I’m looking forward to seeing how the upcoming arc will handle Kari’s gradual transition into official DigiDestined.
Overall, I’m loving Digimon Adventure Reboot’s current direction for the plot and characters. DarkKnightmon is looking to be a personal Digimon antagonist for TK and Angemon, so I’m excited to see how this interesting rivalry and unknown history will affect the upcoming arc.
There is a lot of potential here for a better arc than the “Devimon Arc”. My growing interest in the Digimon TCG Card Game might also be affecting my judgment, but I think I would’ve still loved this episode anyway because everyone came back together.
Thanks everyone for reading this episode review! I really appreciate the support. I’ll see you all next week in the Digital World!
P.S. Let me know if any of y’all are trying to play Digimon TCG or want to chat about learning how to play! I will likely write a thought piece on the game regarding mechanics and general deck building.
