Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train: “The Advent” (Episodes 306 through 308) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 24, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train’s nineteenth story arc: “The Advent”. A lot happened in this 3-episode arc! The real Zahard appeared and brutalized Baam—like wow his Data self and Data Khun Edahn couldn’t even take him down. The revelation about Khun Edahn’s promise with Yu Han Sung was a great payoff, and it blended well with the action sequences. Data Khun Edahn and Data Zahard went out like real Godly champions.
There was also some context on why Data Zahard behaved differently—more hopeful and sympathetic—than the real Zahard who carried the burden of knowing the truth about Arlene Grace and what really happened on their journey through the Tower. In contrast, Data Zahard wanted to help the real Zahard with his anxiety by giving him a “new adventure—a new challenge” through Baam. Hearing how the two Zahards differed was compelling and thought-provoking. Seeing Baam get hurt was just cruel.
The real Zahard continued choking Baam to near death, triggering Baam’s second Thorn to activate and destroy the Hidden Floor. Out of respect for his Data self though, the real Zahard allows Baam to live but keeps the bracelet—the key to defeating him—until the day Baam can come back and challenge him for it.
All the Data people—including Data Zahard, Edahn, Yu Hang Sung, and Batis—were wiped from existence. Rachel’s Icarus Avatar was also erased, putting her back in her weak ugly body—she said it first—while she and everyone else on her team escaped back to The Hell Train. Androssi and the rest of Team Baam—including the dying Khun—made it back on The Hell Train too.
Wangnan made his comeback at the end of this arc, with a Mysterious Weapon wanting to help Wangnan save his friends. The only condition is that Wangnan has to kill one person for that power. I have missed Wangnan so much—and hearing things from the Mysterious Weapon about Wangnan having a “seed of a king” and being the “Prince of the Red-Light District” were good reminders on why I invested in that weird theory about him being connected to Zahard.
The cliffhanger with the three new orders from Zahard is an interesting one, with great potential set-up depending on which orders the new characters carry out. I’m quite happy to see Wangnan being in the story again, Rachel losing her Avatar body—suck it, bitch—and hopefully, Khun survives the bomb going off in his heart. The last arc of The Hell Train—“Three Orders”—should be a satisfying one.
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! I really do appreciate the continuous support! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
