Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train: “Three Orders” (Episodes 309 through 315) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 24, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train’s final story arc: “Three Orders”. I have officially finished The Hell Train story, and wow the payoffs were outstanding. There were many returning characters like Yuri Zahard, Ja Wangnan, White, Hwa Ryun, Beta, Yu Han Sung, Ha Jinsung, etc., an amazing payoff to Baam finally disowning Rachel but still needing to chase after her, and a confirmation on Khun’s near-death experience. Also, war is coming for the Tower based on the three orders given out by Zahard.
Where do I want to start?
Ja Wangnan returned with Baam in front of Yuri Zahard and Karaka at the start of this arc, so let’s start there. Seeing Baam injured, Karaka tried to kill Baam, but Yuri fought him off and then Wangnan used his new weapon to teleport him and Karaka to a different part of The Hell Train. Wangnan appeared back in the story only to disappear again. I was excited to see my favorite character again, so hopefully the disappearance doesn’t last too long this time.
There was a good amount of plot momentum happening in this arc, with the three orders sent out by Zahard causing panic and a potential war with the Po Bidau Family.
While executing any of the three orders—eliminate FUG, kill all the Regulars on The Hell Train, and kill the Po Bidau Family—seems impossible, Adori Zahard decided to carry out all three orders on behalf of Zahard. This led to the real Khun Maschenny Zahard coming for Ha Jinsung—Baam’s teacher from his time as Jue Viole Grace—and declaring war. The action sequence between the two groups was phenomenal. We also learned—or were reminded, I forgot—that Ha Jinsung hates Zahard and everything he stands for because he killed the woman he loved.
Baam discovers Khun’s near-death condition and that Rak had gone after Rachel for putting Khun in that state. After watching a video proving Rachel had tried to kill Khun, Baam finally had enough and declared he’ll make Rachel pay for what she did. She will not be forgiven this time. I loved the shift in Baam’s feelings for Rachel, and how he’s seeing her for the person she really is—a toxic ass little bitch who victim blames and never takes fault in anything she does.
The action sequence where Baam put Rachel down—and telling her they will never meet again—was a powerful moment. He finally broke free of the trauma bond he had with Rachel from their time in the cave, warning her to never go near him or his friends—or he might be forced to really kill her this time. I was so happy for Baam—he stood up for himself and his friends against the one person who used to be his whole world.
Rachel’s character was peeled back in this arc as a result, showing how insecure she was about her appearance, how she blamed others for her own mistakes—like hurting Khun as payback but not accepting that payback logic when Baam attacked her—and the awful toxic control she thought she had over Baam. She was drawn even uglier! YAS!
How SIU kept Rachel in the story after Baam spilled that tea on her was also brilliant. It’s been hinted at throughout the series, but Rachel has secrets about Baam’s origin story—weaponizing that knowledge to keep Baam chasing after her. What a twisted way to keep control over Baam, Rachel. The current theory right now is that Rachel knew Arlene Grace—maybe she was a mother-figure to Rachel—based on how Rachel keeps saying Arlene’s name in her inner thoughts from time to time. Baam will probably keep chasing her up the Tower after he’s done helping Khun, but now it’s for the plot—not because he actually cares about her.
Androssi, Hwa Ryun, and Beta fighting against White was a great action sequence. Sometimes, I forget how White—formerly known as Hoaqin—was a “main antagonist” threat at one point during The Hell Train story. Hwa Ryun also has an ulterior motive regarding White, asking him in secret for assistance once they reach The Last Station—the name of the next big story.
The real Yu Han Sung returned in this arc too, having been sentenced to death for faking Baam’s death at the end of Volume 1 and hiding him. Yu Han Sung accepted his fate, only regretting that he couldn’t taste more types of instant coffee before dying. The twist with Evankhell making an official appearance in the story—only having been mentioned throughout Volume 1—was an amazing payoff.
Baam and Rak are happy though to learn that someone from the Yeon Family—named Yeon Woon—could wake Khun up using the famous flamethrower technique. I’m missing Yeon Yihwa—I hope she comes back to the story too. The happy dance with Baam and Rak was incredibly cute. Baam vows to wake Khun up—his sleeping beauty.
There was a lot going on in this arc, but it was all set-up for what’s coming to The Last Station. Androssi suspects—rightfully—that Hwa Ryun is up to something with White, Yeo Miseng is training to become strong enough to kill White for eating Prince, and White’s last clone went missing too. So, that’s a good reminder that White still has a role to play in the story.
Team Leesoo made a comeback, having arrived at The Last Station to reunite with their friends. I have a very strong feeling that the next arc will be quite explosive considering there’s a war coming, an order to kill all the Regulars on The Hell Train, and the unresolved familial tension between Wangnan and Karaka. There’s more too, with Rachel escaping, Hwa Ryun’s ulterior motive regarding White and The Last Station, Khun being in a deep slumber, and Zahard himself making power moves.
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! I’ve officially—finally—hopped off The Hell Train and arrived at The Last Station story! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
