Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 22 “The Unbeatable Blue Sagittarius” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Episode 22—“The Unbeatable Blue Sagittarius”—hit a milestone. We have officially reached the end of the 1/3 portion of the entire series (22/66). Within those 22 episodes, all original eight DigiDestined have been introduced—with seven out of eight playing an active role—and the epic fight against Devimon is heading toward the climax.
The only immediate downside is everyone being separated right now, but hopefully everyone’s back together to defeat Devimon. I have my doubts considering the B-plot with the Network issues threatening the Human World.
This episode also fleshed out TK’s introduction, and how he came to be here in the Digital World. The episode also addressed Matt’s brotherly concern, and how he would’ve preferred TK not to be involved with all this danger. As a result, Gabumon vowed to protect TK on Matt’s behalf, which is honestly a great way to set-up his mode change moment with WereGarurumon Sagittarius Mode.
WereGarurumon grew wings on his back that could propel him into breakneck speeds, use those wings as blades, and those wings could also turn into six laser beams that was animated so well. I do wonder if the dark miasma is connected to these mode changes because both MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon were attacked by that stuff prior to them obtaining their new forms.
The mode change evolutions are incredibly original too, so this is a great way to close the gap between Ultimate and Mega—giving us fans something actually fresh without it feeling like they’re dragging out the Mega forms. In fact, I encourage the writers to keep the Mega forms away until all the DigiDestined get their mode change forms. Please, Digimon writers, let all the DigiDestined get these Ultimate mode change forms and not just Tai and Matt.
SkullKnightmon—with Devimon’s help—digivolving into DarkKnightmon was gorgeous, and the action sequences wrecking MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon was beautiful. The fight scene was spectacular, and the creative combos MetalGreymon was doing with his metal claw and WereGarurumon were brilliant. The original series seriously underused that metal claw compared to how the reboot’s utilizing that move.
TK was also reunited with the Digiegg in this episode—the kid is so brave! In my last episode review, I questioned TK’s sanity for going down a plot hole, and in this episode the boy was jumping from one floating platform to another without fear to reach that Digiegg! Wow! A true DigiDestined. The Digiegg also hatched into Poyomon—so cute, Patamon will be here soon enough!
Also like I mentioned in my last episode review, the balance of the tone was off due to the divided plot. The lighthearted Mimi and Joe moments didn’t mesh—or transition—well whenever we addressed the B-plot, as going back and forth between these two plots feels confusing and whip-lashing. Also, I do hope the plots end up being connected because separating them doesn’t make sense—especially with the Devimon cliffhanger. He’s about to fight Tai, Matt, and TK personally. That’s awesome!
The “Devimon Arc” is about to enter the climax, and it took only a 1/3 of the whole series to reach this point. Gotta say, that’s not entirely bad, but the journey to get there definitely could’ve used some work. Let’s hope the 2/3 (44/66)—or the first half (33/66)—improves on the reboot’s main strengths as the story continues. Whichever comes first. Thanks for reading this episode review, everyone! I’ll see you all next week for the “Devimon” fight!
