Tower of God Volume 3: “Heart” (Episodes 17 through 19) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Reviews. Please read with caution.
On September 30, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 3’s fourth story arc: “Heart”. The short arc centered around Deng Deng and his important role as “The Heart” for Baylord Doom—the oldest brother of Yama and Paul. Yeah, Baylord Paul really did draw the short straw on cool names.
Anyway, the reason everyone wants Deng Deng is revealed through Gado’s explanation and defection from Baylord Yama. Gado’s intentions for Deng Deng looked genuine at first as a father-figure, but it’s confirmed that he merely pretended to keep “The Heart” safe. Deng Deng was devastated, not wanting to die for someone else. The backstory for Deng Deng was emotional and tragic, showing Gado had done nothing but control and abuse the boy his entire life. The traumatic bond that formed between Gado and Deng Deng was too real.
The fight scenes were amazing with Jordan showing off his transformations—Frieza-style—and Karaka and Baam teaming up against a sleeping Baylord Yama. The sleeping, and how only Gado barely survived the last time Yama went on a sleep-fighting rampage was made crystal clear in this action sequence. Reading this fight scene also showcased how powerful Yama really is in his sleeping state. I cannot imagine how powerful he’d be conscious. No wonder Baam and Karaka want his help in fighting Kallavan.
Khun and Rak were briefly featured in this arc too. Khun learned he had the ability to heal people back to life—somehow connected to the Yeon flame inside him. They were also trying to fight and escape from the FUG members helping Gado and Paul. Evankhell and Yu Han Sung were also shown during this arc facing off against the “Darkness of the Tower”, which is tied to what’s been going with Baam and the canine people. I’m sure everything will come together.
The cliffhanger at the end was pretty effective in making me want to read more. The two brothers—Doom and Yama—are awake! I loved how SIU pulled off a high-stakes situation of seeing which brother will wake up first—and who’s more terrifying to have woken up at all. Tower of God is still pulling power-moves after a decade! That’s truly awestriking and inspiring. You did good work, SIU! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
