Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 23 “The Messenger of Darkness, Devimon” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Episode 23—“The Messenger of Darkness, Devimon”—was an action-driven episode. The pacing is going too fast in my opinion, but Devimon arriving to fight Tai, Matt, and TK seemed timely at the same time. The fast pace is mostly from how often I’ve said “this is action-driven” for like the past three episodes.
The B-Plot with the other DigiDestined is somewhat connected to the A-Plot, now that there was confirmation that Devimon is also responsible for what’s happening on the Network and the immediate danger coming for the Human World. It’s a source of his power, apparently. This plotline also feels repetitive as well, so I’m hoping after this “Devimon Arc” is over that the plot gets better with future Digimon enemies.
Speaking of future enemies, this episode debunked my Devimon theory—about him digivolving into the other enemies like Myotismon and Piedmon—because Devimon digivolved into NeoDevimon, his Ultimate form. Devimon is incredibly more powerful in this reboot because he gave MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon a hard time without digivolving. Devimon made everyone hide—going defensive—for most of the fight. My eyes were glued to the screen the whole, with the uneasy tension of how they were going to win this fight.
The B-Plot was getting more balanced with the A-Plot regarding the tone, with everyone fighting their hardest to save both worlds. The other DigiDestined had their special Digivolution sequences shown for their Ultimate forms—my favorite Zudomon sequence was pretty awesome to see again. How Sora and Mimi hugged was pretty cute too, when they were the first ones to go Ultimate—reinforcing that Girl Power moment I mentioned in earlier reviews because they digivolved in the episode order of when they first received them: Mimi, Sora, Izzy, and then Joe.
Devimon—NeoDevimon, I mean—was also defeated at the end rather too easily, so seeing DarkKnightmon using the dark evolution stone to revive him felt right. We’ve officially entered the 2/3 portion of the Digimon Adventure Reboot, so I’m hoping this arc wraps up properly for everyone involved, but my hopes aren’t the highest right now.
I have a strong feeling TK and Poyomon—having digivolved to Tokomon in this episode—will be the ones to defeat Devimon somehow, since that’s how it went down in the original series, and Devimon keeps calling Tokomon “his dear old friend”, so a clash between them is predictable and inevitable. I also did like how WereGarurumon was the only one who mode changed into Sagittarius Mode to defeat NeoDevimon, but MetalGreymon didn’t change into Alteros Mode. The reboot series is likely saving that for next week based on the preview.
Overall, this episode was okay. It wasn’t super amazing but not super terrible either. I do hope next week is better or the next arc after Devimon is defeated. Thanks for reading this episode review, everyone! I’ll see you all next week in the Digital World!
