Tower of God Volume 3: “Deng Deng” (Episodes 1 through 7) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 27, 2020, I started Tower of God Volume 3’s first story arc: “Deng Deng” and finished on September 29, 2020. The first 7 episodes of Season 3—Volume 3—took me longer than expected. I was feeling more fatigued than I realized from my reading experience with Tower of God’s monstrous Volume 2. Nonetheless, I had officially entered the Webtoon’s current season.
What a hellish journey it was during the month of September 2020. I will cherish my time with this Webtoon—especially the miserable Hell Train that I took for granted—during the days I struggle to read One Piece manga.
Years have passed since the battle at The Last Station and the events of The Hell Train, with the first episode time-skipping to show us where our main characters have gone and done. Ja Wangnan and Yeo Miseng reunited with Horyang—seeing proof that Cassano kept his word and woke the guy up from his long-time sleep. In addition, Khun eventually awakened too with the help of Evan, Leesoo, and a big Yeon Flamed Hammer!
Sachi and Boro officially left the team—and the story—to figure out their own way of climbing up the Tower. They felt out of place throughout most of Volume 2 anyway after their official debuts, so it seemed like the right call to have them written off at the start of this new Volume.
Baam is continuing his training with Evankhell with a new hairstyle. I do appreciate the consistency of changing Baam’s physical appearance every season and / or story arc to reflect his character growth. Baam’s power—and cockiness—also expanded during the timeskip to match the Rankers he encountered like Mad Dog and Baylord Yama.
I was in awe of Baam’s new character design and brilliantly drawn shinsu water techniques. How he overpowered Mad Dog without breaking a sweat—and how Baam pretended to lose to Mad Dog—was a creative stroke of brilliance. Volume 3 started off strong with its tighter plotline, great characterization, good writing, and enhanced artwork that keeps on improving consistently without a doubt.
This first story arc—“Deng Deng”—is named after the newest character introduced, with Baam needing to save him—and Deng Deng’s friend Louie—for someone named Baylord Yama, a powerful High Ranker and FUG Slayer like Karaka but stronger! Baam wants Baylord Yama to help him and his team rescue Ha Jinsung and fight against Kallavan. However, Baam pulled a classic Baam and wants to save Deng Deng and Louie from being Baylord Yama’s fighting dogs, which conflict with the promise he made.
With Baam being Baam, he decided to save Deng Deng from his cruel fate while also convincing Baylord Yama to still help him fight against Kallavan. Khun, having only woken up recently, was baffled that Baam would still risk everything for the sake of others. At this point Khun, you should know—no matter how long you fall asleep for—the 25th Baam will never change the essence of his true character.
New characters named Yool—a snake guy—and Kell joined Team Baam, blackmailing Baam with Yeon Yihwa as a hostage. I hated this arrangement so much…
Overall, what a great first 7 episodes into Volume 3! I enjoyed the fresh take on the new story direction regarding Baam wanting to save his master and his new power-ups, in addition to new characters being introduced and old characters—like Leesoo—making a strong comeback after a long absence!
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower! I have 61 Webtoon episodes left to read until I reach the Tower’s highest point!
BRING IT ON!
