Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “Zygaena’s Flower” (Episodes 29 through 33) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 5, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s ninth story arc: “Zygaena’s Flower”. The arc kicked off the 21st Floor’s official test, with Team Sweet and Sour—named in honor of Nia—already in the lead due to all the other teams forfeiting in fear of Viole’s FUG reputation. So, a new floor test was administered. Team Sweet and Sour were to look for Zygaena’s Flower within two hours, which only grew inside Zygaena—a large whale-like creature.
The test was going smoothly until Horyang and Prince encountered Urek Mazino—an Irregular that had been foreshadowed since Part 1. They could sense how powerful he was and how he was guarding the flower, so they considered failing the exam to avoid a fight. However, Viole couldn’t afford to fail the test—since one of his friends will die every time he fails—so he confronts the Irregular head-on. Again, the fight scene was drawn beautifully in this arc.
We also learned Urek Mazino’s motive, which isn’t to reach the top of the Tower, but to escape the Tower. Mazino wants to explore the open-world and the limitless sky outside of the Tower. Viole declared that he only cared about protecting those who were precious to him. Seeing Baam’s eyes through Viole’s unkempt hair keeps giving me hope.
The arc foreshadowed how Viole could become stronger, as he managed to leave a cut on Mazino’s face by the end of their short battle. Mazino was impressed that Viole had chosen to protect someone else—Miseng—instead of trying to win their game. I also liked how Viole had help from his teammates, but they couldn’t even touch Mazino—aside from Viole’s one tiny cut.
Overall, Tower of God is showing us that Baam we knew from Part 1 is still somewhere in the Viole persona and officially introducing Urek Mazino—another Irregular—shows what Viole could ultimately become if he allowed himself to succumb to darkness. The Webtoon series is getting better and better the higher we climb! Thanks for reading my reviews so far, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower! Personally, I can’t stop until I see how this all ends.
