Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “FUG” (Episodes 26 through 28) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 5, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s eighth story arc: “FUG”. This short arc finally gave us answers on how Baam became Viole—a member of FUG—and how he became so dark over the past six years away from his old friends. The arc also focused on Yeon Yihwa and her reasons for sticking with Viole—needing him to help control her fire power—despite the awful rumors being spread about FUG and Viole being awful people.
Turns out, Viole is a persona Baam is forced to wear in order to protect his old friends from being killed by FUG. Ja Wangnan was furious to learn about Viole’s backstory, and how Viole was being manipulated to further their goal of killing Zahard. Only Viole is capable of this feat because his status as an Irregular makes him immune to the rules of the Tower. I’m enjoying the friendship development between Ja Wangnan and Viole, with Wangnan declaring they were friends allowed Baam to resurface—his eyes were shown—even if it was only for a moment.
The artwork for Viole’s character is absolutely stunning in this arc, and revealing Baam’s eyes was a heartbreaking way to show the readers that our innocent protagonist is still somewhere in all that pain.
Hwa Ryun also made her return in this arc, explaining to Ja Wangnan what happened to Baam and why they did what they did to him. She also revealed that she and Jinsung—Viole’s martial arts teacher—originally came to visit Viole’s team in order to kill and replace them with a stronger team, but they’ve changed their minds out of respect for Viole.
I wasn’t expecting Hwa Ryun to be so open and friendly with Wangnan and the other characters, but this conversation was meant to dispel the awful rumors about FUG that were set-up at the arc’s beginning. In some ways, the rumors were true, but not when it came to Viole. Thinking about Baam and how he came to become Viole makes my heart throb. He deserved better than what destiny gave him.
Tower of God is becoming more and more fascinating the higher the climb up. I’m looking forward to all the pieces coming together soon. I really need to see Khun and Baam—plus all his other old friends—reunite someday. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
