The Good Place 4x08 "The Funeral to End All Funerals" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The episode is divided into two storylines that gradually come together. Eleanor, Jason, Tahani, and Janet have funerals for themselves while Michael goes to trial to hear what the Judge will ultimately rule the experiment. The message about people improving is highlighted through Michael’s growth and plea that humans need a point system that can reflect true change.
The Judge ultimately agrees with all Michael’s assessment. She allows the Soul Squad to join the trial, including a frozen Chidi (Weekend At Bernie’s style), to hear the results. She declares the experiment a success, and plans to destroy Earth in order to start over. The Earth is too forked up, and The Judge wants to start from scratch instead of fixing points for everyone.
Bad Janet and several other Janets swoop into the scene, granting the Soul Squad their tomorrow. Eleanor decides their only play left is to wake up Chidi because he’s studied philosophy his entire life and could potentially save them all. Michael calls this a risky move, but Eleanor is insistent. The cliffhanger lands on Chidi’s unsuspecting shoulders.
