Grey's Anatomy 16x08 "My Shot" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Grey’s Anatomy reached its 350th episode. Wow. I cannot believe 50 episodes have already passed after the 300th one. A lot went down in-between those times. We’re given payoff on our time invested: flashbacks to the things Meredith’s done in the name of saving that person’s life and references to old characters like Cristina Yang, Callie Torres, and Addison Montgomery. Even April Kepner and Arizona Robbins were mentioned. The trial that will determine Meredith’s fate takes place in this episode.
The Medical Board puts Meredith Grey on trial. Bailey doesn’t show emotion when being questioned, Webber lies for Meredith again, and exposes that he pulled some strings to get her matched at Seattle Grace, and DeLuca is dismissed for having a romance with her. Also, Alex Karev is called out for tampering with Zola’s adoption. Things are not looking good for her. Schmidt also realizes on the stand that he was the one who ratted Dr. Grey out to Bailey in the first place. Nobody’s happy right now.
Dr. Castello is also present as one of the doctors on the Medical Board. The stupid doctor who killed Derek Shepherd by not ordering a head CT. Meredith is supposed to stay calm, but once he goes in about Zola, the anger explodes right out. Meredith is not having him judge her for what she did. After this, Dr. Castello has a seizure and gets sent packing to Grey-Sloan. Amelia is put in charge of him… and he dies. However, that is not her fault. I couldn’t believe this all went down. He died, and nobody cared.
Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey finally argue about him choosing Meredith over her. This was a 16 years in the making as the jealous in Bailey can be traced as early as season one. Webber fights back saying he thought Bailey was family, but after what she did on the stand out of spite, he isn’t so sure anymore.
Then all of Meredith’s former patients including KATIE BRYCE come back to testify on her behalf. I almost cried seeing Katie Bryce as an adult, telling the Medical Board that while Meredith was a first-year intern, she ended up saving her life. This allowed her to have a baby girl. The tears are real! Katie Bryce needs to be in the series finale now.
After all this and Bailey’s epic speech, the Medical Board reinstates Meredith’s license to practice medicine. Bailey also offers Meredith her old job back. This is getting very good. Jackson and Maggie had a dumb moment. Schmidt’s being hated by his fellow residents. Meredith and Andrew DeLuca take a break after what happened. He realizes Meredith’s love for him is not the same as respect.
Overall, a well-done episode that honored what the show’s all about. Meredith Grey is the Sun and unstoppable. Cristina Yang’s words are beautiful. I hope Sandra Oh comes back someday.
