Supernatural 14x10 "Nihilism" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
This episode was pretty awesome in my opinion. I’m going to let my Supernatural Fanboy-ness loose for a second. The intro scene itself was a structured well. Opening up with that was interesting because we know it’s all in Dean’s head, but following a cliffhanger with Dean running a bat with dead Pamela, the blinded psychic from seasons 4. I remembered Jensen Ackles owns a bar in real life, so there were probably a lot of references I missed throughout the whole thing. The song playing in the background, “Searchin’ for a Rainbow” pretty much told us this scenario was all in his head through the lyrics.
Well, the monsters attacked the city and Alternate Michael has repossessed Dean, giving him his usual wardrobe. I was mind-blown by Jensen Ackles’s performance in this episode. His dialogue, mannerisms, and facial expressions really worked for me. This episode renewed my faith in the show, as I was in doubt about the show’s longevity, but this hour of television proved the boys can still pull it off.
The motivation behind Alternate Michael brings up an interesting concept about Chuck. Having the Supernatural multiverse being comprised of failed drafts of God’s Work makes a whole lot of sense. I would go into this more, but I fear I’ll never stop talking about it.
Anyways, he is like Lucifer in many ways. After Alternate Michael killed his Lucifer, he believed God would return to save them, but of course, he didn’t show up. Now, he wants to destroy Earths to draw Chuck out so he can kill him. It’s also like Amara’s idea on killing people until God showed up. I feel like Chuck and Amara need to come back and speak to Alternate Michael or something. There’s a lot of story potential in this reveal, but it’s a repeated motive.
Jack and Castiel had a great father-son scene. I loved this because Castiel being a dad to this boy makes their bond so fascinating.
The way they trapped Alternate Michael is not going to last. According to all of the books from the “ways to die” library, he will retake Dean and end the world. However, Death Billie presents Dean with the one other way he can die—most likely the only way to stop Alternate Michael. He is shocked by what he reads and asks Death Billie what to do with this information. This show is getting me intrigued again, haven’t felt this in awhile.
Overall, I loved this episode. Best episode of Season 14 right now. I’m looking forward to see how all of this plays out and how the 300th episode will be structured. I pray to Chuck to make sure my 300th post is my eventual review on it. See y’all next week!
