Dragon Ball Super: Broly Anime Movie Review
Major Spoilers are included in this movie review. Please read with caution.
One of the best Dragon Ball movies I have ever seen, if not the best one. Almost everything we loved about this series was included when it came to fan favorites Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and Broly. I would normally give a brief summary of what the series is about, but it’s officially 2019, you either know Dragon Ball or you pretend to know it. Plus, going over this series with someone would take too long.
The plot of the movie centers on said characters above, with Broly as the primary antagonist and now he is officially a part of the Dragon Ball universe. In the beginning of the movie though, we are given a fleshed-out origin story of the Saiyan race and their time serving under Lord Frieza. This is significant because this backstory is officially canon. There is no more debates on it… this movie has redone a lot of characters for the better.
The animation is better compared to the Dragon Ball Super series in my opinion. But the audience can tell where most of the budget went for fight scenes. The shifts between the standard animation and then the Z Fighter video game animation are clear towards the end of the final battle between Gogeta and Broly. All of the fight scenes exceeded normal Dragon Ball expectations, especially the ascension of Vegeta from base to SSJ to SSG to Blue.
The humor was also spot-on throughout the movie. Surprisingly, a good amount of my laughs came from Lord Frieza himself. His interactions with Goku are rubbing off on him strangely.
The ending of the movie also caught my attention. How Goku introduces himself to Broly connects to how Goku perceives his Saiyan Heritage. I was impressed and applaud how they incorporated it. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen the movie. I wonder what other stories can be told with Broly moving forward, considering they changed Broly to have the power to channel the Great Ape without transforming. This could be alluding to the Super Saiyan 4 transformation becoming canon too.
Most of the other Z-Fighters were absent, the only exception being Piccolo, who had to torture himself by teaching Goku and Vegeta how to fusion dance. Seems fitting considering Piccolo also taught their sons the technique. Goku himself was hilarious throughout the entire movie… watching movie dubbed helps too.
Overall, the movie was amazing. Go see it if you’re a Dragon Ball fan. I can’t wait to own it on DVD.
