Good Trouble 1x02 "The Coterie" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The spin-off is officially one of my favorite teen dramas. Callie and Mariana are killing it on the dance floor at the cost of their jobs. The flashback to the current situations were done better this week, unlike last week’s Pilot episode. Also, Jude has returned! He came to the apartment to party with his sisters and to help Callie through her situation with Gael. She clearly isn’t bi-phobic, but it’s new. Callie is adjusting to the idea of dating a man interested in both men and women. Jude even brings up his opinion on “labels”, which reminds me of how much he’s grown and matured. So much wisdom, Judicorn.
Although, having sex with guys who have girlfriends is not so wise. Callie and Jude talk about it way too much. The Fosters is a thing of the past.
I did enjoy the Callie-centric aspect of this episode, but hopefully next week, Mariana will get her chance to shine. The spin-off revolves around both Callie AND Mariana. Plus, her story working with sexist co-workers can drive an interesting plot, especially with Mariana involved. She is going to have an awkward day at work after all those embarrassing phone calls / text messages to her boss.
The other residents of the apartment get screentime this week… Alice for example, the landlord, is in love with her best friend Sumi but pretends to be her only “best friend” because she doesn’t want to lose her. Sumi takes advantage and breaks Alice’s heart by announcing her engagement to another woman. I would’ve stolen the cake too. Sumi doesn’t deserve Alice.
Gael deals with an ex-boyfriend and assures Callie that he was only causal. They also get together underwater, and it was interesting…
Ben and Rebecca from Callie’s work are going to hook-up. I know this type of show. They are called last minute to Judge Wilson, but Callie misses the call because she’s… shitfaced out of her mind and dancing to the music. Rebecca ends up getting the prize of writing the bench memo. I don’t trust either of these kids… and Callie is going to have a tough time competing, assuming she doesn’t get fired.
Overall, the second episode was excellent. I hope the show doesn’t overfocus on Callie though. Mariana needs her story as the “A-Story” too, but we’re two episodes into the show. Gotta give them more time to convince me otherwise.
