The Originals 5x13 "When the Saints Go Marching In" Episode Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review. Read with Caution.
If you haven't read my emotional goodbye post for The Originals, the link is here.
The series finale premiered last week. I had the necessary time to process the entire thing... I even watched it a second time over the weekend. In conclusion... it was not nearly as effective as The Vampire Diaries series finale, but damn it was still emotional! There was one glaring problem with the ending of the finale, but I'll get to that after I talk about the rest.
Coming off last week's cliffhanger, Klaus is close to ending his life to stop The Hollow once and for all. But Hope comes in the nick of time and knocks her father out before he plunged that white oak stake into his heart.
This is where things get really depressing.
Everyone has essentially given up on trying to save Klaus' life. This is an ancient family who was determined to save each other even if one of them had to suffer for it. No one has a clear solution and have accepted Klaus' impending death.
Freya has to comfort Hope, who wants to separate the power again, but they'd be back at the beginning of the season, with the family scattered across the globe. She is also searching for something to help Klaus with his last moments while trying to convince Vincent to become her baby daddy with Keelin.
Rebekah tracks down Kol, who is leaving town to return to Davina instead of being with the family on Klaus' last day on Earth. He has a right to his anger and resentment over Klaus, who has done nothing but dagger them over the centuries. He also reminds us how he was left out of "Always and Forever" for so long, that he didn't want to buy into it for Klaus' sake.
He also parts some wisdom to Rebekah about "happiness being a choice", which leads to a sex-fueled reunion with Marcel.
While all this is going on, Klaus is chained up and awakens to pain. He is tormented by The Hollow's hallucinations of Mikael while also being comforted by an illusion of Cami. What an effective angel and devil on the shoulders' situation.
I loved the return of these two fan-favorite characters, but they were not used to the fullest extent. I wanted to see more of Mikael and definitely more of Cami, but I'm glad they found time in their schedules to return for the finale. Their part in the episode comes to an end when Hope finds him and Elijah snaps his neck from behind.
Elijah, with Freya's help, manages to take some of The Hollow's magic inside him temporarily, to help Klaus have some comfort before he dies. Klaus doesn't want to delay the inevitable, but Elijah urges his brother to say goodbye to his family and his daughter.
Soon after, Caroline returns to cash in on a debt. She plays the voice recording he left her all the back in The Vampire Diaries Season Four, Episode 20 "The Originals", also known as the backdoor pilot of the series. He is surprised that Caroline kept it all these years and they go on the tour... which is now a deleted scene!!
I'm furious they cut it out! We waited years for this moment, and they delete it from the final cut! But I'll post it here for those who haven't seen it. Enjoy and pretend this was a part of the episode!
Their goodbye was also emotional and so was their final kiss. Caroline has once again lost a great love in her life, and now I hope she finds someone who will put her first no matter what.
I mean Stefan died for his brother and Klaus died for his daughter, which are selfless acts that Caroline appreciates and understands, but she definitely deserves better than that. If she gets a big enough role on Legacies, I pray they give her someone amazing and not Alaric Saltzman.
Meanwhile, after Rebekah and Marcel's lovemaking, they meet up with Freya, Keelin, Elijah, and Kol to talk about the good times with Klaus Mikaelson. They are trying to make the best out of the situation. This is strangely the happiest I've ever seen them.
They are joined by Klaus and Hope, who are ready to celebrate his last day together. Klaus welcomes Kol and admits how much he adores him. This touches Kol who is glad he returned for this occasion.
The Mikaelson Dinner Scene is filled with no dialogue. There are a lot of laughs, loves, and a sense of sadness as we neared the end. Marcel promises Hope that he will be there for her no matter what, even if he can't be there all the time. Then Rebekah gets the family to do the burning ceremony.
Everyone, except Elijah, burns their wishes. Klaus gives a classic and elegant speech on how much he loves and cherishes his family. And that even with him gone, the Mikaelsons will live on in their vow, children, and devotion to one another. Then with one last "Always and Forever", he takes Hope to the side.
He confesses to her how she taught him about "unconditional love", and Hope promises to do good by their name Mikaelson. They hug one last time and I cry for the two of them!
The Original Trio: Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah.
They meet up at the bench where Klaus and Elijah first plotted to take over New Orleans. Then Klaus apologizes to Rebekah for getting in the way of her happiness and arranges for Rebekah to get the cure in Mystic Falls after Damon is ready to die. She is grateful and hugs her brothers goodbye forever.
You read that right... Elijah breaks the stake in two and declares how he'll die by his brother's side. He secretly said his goodbyes to the family and received their blessing to follow Klaus to the Great Beyond known as Peace.
Marcel makes all the vampires leave New Orleans, officially giving it back to the humans, werewolves, and witches. Rebekah joins him and declares how she will become human one day, and if he is willing to watch her grow old, then she'd very much like to marry him. He agrees and they are endgame!
Vincent meets up with Freya and Keelin as well. He declares, being inspired by Klaus' sacrifice, that he will happily become the father of their children. They all hug together and I can't wait to meet the little ones in Legacies. At least I hope they'll appear someday on the show.
Hope is painting a portrait of the family at Freya and Keelin's wedding, while Hayley watches her in spirit form. She was underutilized! Hayley deserved better too!
In the closing moments, Elijah and Klaus debate whether there is truly Peace after this. But Elijah declares even if there is darkness on the other side, they'll face it together. Elijah offers Klaus his half of the stake and they stand in front of each other.
Klaus gives his last words to Elijah, confessing while he didn't deserve his brotherly love, he truly appreciated it. Then Elijah tells him it was his greatest honor being at his side. With one last looks at each other, they plunge their stakes into one another. They don't break eye contact as they withered away... and the episode ends there.
No afterlife of Elijah and Hayley dancing together! I hated this part the most! Why tease us about a final dance if they weren't going to show us it?! I feel so betrayed by all this! Ugh... !! Peace clearly exists, and I am just so angry that we didn't get to see the two brothers find it!
It's ridiculous! I can get on board with their deaths, but not seeing the afterlife for them is completely unacceptable. We got to see Josh, Hayley, Esther and her sister Dahlia find Peace, but not the two main characters of the show? That's wrong!
Ehhh... it's whatever I guess. I will surely miss this show.
But the world lives on in Legacies.... I can get behind Hope's journey.
