Marvel's Cloak and Dagger 1x10 "Colony Collapse" Episode Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review. Read with Caution!
The season finale of Cloak and Dagger was pretty awesome to say the least.
We got great fight scenes, good character development, and a couple of references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (Tony Stark and Danny Rand mentions). All of the storylines except for the cliffhanger were tied up too.
The story was complemented by Evita's Aunt talking about previous "Divine Pairings" who managed to save New Orleans in the past. However, the ominous threat of "one must die" lingers in the finale as well.
Speaking of cliffhangers, last week's is addressed immediately. Water Girl is sent by Roxxon to kill Tandy for knowing too much and holds her mother hostage. Tandy manages to get the jump on her and uses her daggers to force Water Girl to escape out the door. This makes Tandy realize Mina and her father are probably in trouble too, unaware of the Terrors emerging around the city.
Tyrone is also on the run, making his way to his father's Red Hawks thing for the parade. His father gifts him the cloak and instructs him to get out of New Orleans before the police get him like they did Billy. When the police arrive for Tyrone, he disappears.
He hides himself in the parade and uses his teleportation to evade the police officers. This scene was engrossing, watching him utilize his powers to such a degree and with great cleverness. However, he is caught alongside O'Reilly, not willing to use his gift in front of so many people.
The officers take them to the storeroom as they are not being officially booked. Connors plans to have Tyrone kill O'Reilly and then he will kill Tyrone, knowing the public will buy that story and the department will back him up on it.
Tandy goes to Mina's and finds Terrors destroying her house. She kills them all using the daggers and rescues Mina from the closet. Mina explains how the pipes blew like the oil rig and that there are several pipes throughout the city. If they all blew, the entire city will be infected.
They go to headquarters of Roxxon and corner Peter about why he did it this way. He explains that he was simply trying to catch up with Tony Stark and Danny Rand. As a result, Tandy goes into his hopes and rips them away, putting him in the same state that Ivan Hess was before.
Mina and Tandy decide to go to the warehouse where they can shut off the energy core. But the Terrors intercept them in addition to Water Girl. She is overtaken by the Terrors while the girls go hide. While trying to shut a window though, Mina gets infected.
Tyrone and O'Reilly try to figure out how to escape the storage room. She suggests his teleportation, but he is unable to control it without his cloak. Then Connors comes back for them, ready to execute his plan.
Before he can though, the Terrors attack!
O'Reilly did the "break thumb" trick to escape her cuffs and gets Tyrone's off too. He finds the Cloak and manages to lure a lot of the Terrors away. They corner Tyrone in a room and rip at his cloak, almost getting him. But he teleports away just in time...
To save Tandy from killing Mina. Instead, Tyrone tasers her down. Tandy is grateful and jokes that it took him long enough to show up.
They return to the church to figure out a plan. They have no idea what to do until Evita arrives and tells them about the "Divine Pairing". She also reveals that one of them will die to save the city, an idea that Tandy is completely against. Right before she leaves, Evita kisses Tyrone, which Tandy approves of.
Tyrone is in doubt about his abilities. He thinks he can't save anyone and without the cloak, he can't even control his powers. But then Tandy hands him Billy's jacket back to use in place of the cloak. It was the first thing she ever stole. She thinks he doesn't need it but gives it to him anyway for confidence.
Now ready, Cloak and Dagger are off to save the city by shutting off the core.
The Terrors attack the duo, but O'Reilly gives them cover with her sniper rifle. Connors finds her somehow though and gets his revenge on her. He knocks her down as a pipe bursts, immersing O'Reilly in the Terror energy, and then he kicks her into the water.
Connors faces off against Cloak and Dagger, but Dagger slices his gun in half and points her dagger at his throat. Then Cloak takes him to the top of the roof and decides not to throw him off. Instead, Cloak swallows Connors into his darkness... not sure what happened and the show gives no explanation either.
But whatever!! Connors is gone!
After dealing with his personal demon, Tyrone decides to sacrifice himself to save the city and teleports ahead to shut down the energy core. Tandy, pissed as hell, catches up to him in the core room and tells him that they're doing this together.
They hold hands and combine their powers to completely shut down the energy output. A swirling light and darkness vortex bursts out of the rooftop and the city is saved! It wasn't that dramatic, but it got the job done. They rested next to each other on top of the rooftop, still holding hands.
Evita sees how the city is saved in the news. Tyrone is still wanted for the murder of Fuchs but leaves something behind for his mother at the house. Tandy shows her mother the newspaper saying "Roxxon Responsible" and Tyrone moves into the church to hide out. The episode ends there but we are given a bonus scene:
O'Reilly emerges out of the water with newfound powers and speeds away.
That surprise ending was enough to get me excited for next season. I hope the show learned from the mistakes of the first season in order to have a much stronger second season. They don't need to spend five episodes to convince us about the premise, we're convinced... just dive into it now!
