The Originals 5x04 "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" Episode Review
Welcome back to New Orleans, Klaus Mikaelson. No one but your adoring fans missed you and your devilish methods. The search for Hayley is on, and no one has any luck on her whereabouts. And after Klaus' failure to retrieve Elijah last week, he is not in the mood for any more disappointments.
Let's get into how Klaus continues to poison the city and his kill count.
Spoilers are coming:
Klaus is questioning all the supernatural factions: werewolves, vampires, and witches. None of them have any grudge or reason to kidnap Hayley. All of them love the girl, but Klaus is not buying their alleged bullshit.
Teaming up with Marcel in this episode, the super-vampires investigate a house where they notice lots of blood and the words: "Filth. Freak. Crossbread." written on the walls. Whoever is behind all this has a problem with hybrids: Henry, Hope, Hayley, Klaus, and Marcel are their enemies.
In response to this, Klaus decides to kidnap one member from each faction (David, Colette, and Josh) to raise the stakes. If Hayley is not returned by sundown, he plans to slaughter them all. Marcel tries to confront him on this plan of attack, but Klaus stays inside the barrier.
Smart move, Klaus. The dynamic between the two of them is quite interesting in this episode. They are playing around Marcel's superior strength to Klaus really well while establishing the new status quo between them (co-rulers of the vampires).
Marcel tries to play "new Elijah" because Klaus is acting out about Elijah's abandonment and he misses his brother terribly. The Salvatore Brothers' feelings got me in this scene. Klaus is about to give up on his plan to kill the hostages until he gets a present: Hayley's flesh in a box.
He snaps Marcel's neck and attacks the hostages to accelerate the search for the mother of his child. He kills two out of three but Josh survives because plot-armor. Vincent stepped in, thanks to Ivy's magic tarot cards predicting the massacre, and snapped Klaus' neck in the nick of time.
Everyone is at each other's throats, but Klaus' well-thought-out strategy paid off. He now knows a vampire definitely kidnapped Hayley. The vampires, even during the first season, had problems with wolves and more paranoia issues with hybrids.
Marcel agrees with his conclusion but not how he got the results. Nonetheless, Marcel joins with Klaus and forces all the vampires to relinquish their daylight rings. This is to make sure vampires are closely monitored and to restrict their movements.
He states the rules have changed because running things the old way isn't working anymore. Taking advice from his sire and father-figure, Marcel uses fear to keep the vampires in line.
Then Klaus kills a vampire, beheading him, when he disagrees. No more getting tossed in a garden to desiccate. If you fall out of line, you die. The original father-son duo are back and they are in charge!
But Klaus and Vincent are not on the same page anymore. Vincent is done letting the witches get bullied by the Mikaelsons and threatens to go to war personally if he continues to harass them. Klaus leaves him without saying another word.
At the end of the episode, Klaus learns the enemy they are up against. Foes he believed were gone: NAZIS! Nazis are in New Orleans and they are trying to purify the vampire race by getting rid of crossbreeding hybrids. This strangely makes sense!
LET'S GO TO MYSTIC FALLS!
Freya leaves New Orleans to check on Hope. She brings beignets and they get to talking about cute boys. I enjoyed how Freya teased her niece about Roman and how she didn't wave back when he noticed her. This is too cute!
They go to the Mean Girl Lair (Saltzman Twins' hiding place) and try out some spells to help Hayley. Freya comments its "pretty" for a creepy hangout spot.
Let's pause here and talk about these mentions. I'm getting a vibe that the Saltzman Twins take after Caroline and rule the school pretty much with Queen Bee Attitudes. And they have Alaric's drinking problem. That's awesome?
Okay back to the review!
Hope figures out Freya is stalling her because the spells won't work to locate Hayley. Then this is where things go dark. Freya tells Hope she has the potential to bring the end of the world, or at least the supernatural one. She does not take this well and almost lights the place on fire.
Freya warns her that Hayley may die. I'm warning all of you readers that this is a real possibility!! Hayley is getting set up to become the first major death of the season. If she goes, I don't know how Hope can handle it.
There is also a cute moment between Roman and Hope though afterwards. Freya thinks they're cute too. She loves being an aunt. So damn good at it.
I think Roman is connected to either Hayley's disappearance, the Nazis, Antoinette, or a combination. He has to play a bigger role than the love interest. Right? Like Hope is a Mikaelson. She isn't allowed to find love so easily.
Sound off in the comments if you got better theories or have something to say about the latest episode. I can talk about anything. How about that shot of the Salvatore House? Super nostalgic.
I miss The Vampire Diaries so much.
