The 100 5x03 "Sleeping Giants" Review
Someday I will figure out The 100 airs on Tuesdays alongside The Flash.
But the show is getting a sixth season! Rejoice because I thought it was going to end at season five. We might get a Clarke and Bellamy pairing after all. I'm not a big fan of it but I also wouldn't mind if it happened.
I'll determine if it's going to be a good or bad thing once this season concludes, but I'm leaning toward good considering the direction we're heading towards.
This episode had a lot of throwbacks to season one and a rich moral dilemma. Watching this show and thinking about the choices gives me great joy, but it also reveals a darkness in me when I think about the impossible choices they make every season and this most recent episode.
Spoilers ahead:
The episode picks up where we left off in the season premiere, no mention of what happened in episode two yet. Clarke is full-on mamma mode and is trying to protect Madi at all costs. She decides winning is not an option and hides her daughter before letting herself get captured. Clarke says "I love you" and I cried!
The Prisoners (the name of their people) catch up with Clarke but keep her alive to learn what happened to the world. Clarke remains silent to keep the advantage. These people have no idea how many are out there or what kind of life they disrupted by showing up here.
The Female Prisoner Leader (Diyoza is her name. I had to look it up) is trying to get Clarke to talk, not buying her silent treatment. One of her lieutenants believes she cannot speak English, but Diyoza sees right through that. This tactic is the same one Lincoln used when he was a prisoner of the 100 during season one.
After the Prisoners close in on Madi, Clarke breaks her silence to protect her. She tells Diyoza if she spares Madi, she will tell her everything she wants to know. Diyoza agrees, orders her men to stand down, and listens to Clarke's story (pretty much recapping the past four seasons).
Back in space, Bellamy and his team make it to the enemy ship. They look around and take precautions because they have no idea who they're up against. The team finds the cryo sleep prisoners (300 of them) and debate on how to deal with the possible threat.
Murphy suggests the easiest solution: kill them all. I went on a rant at my computer screen saying "Do it! Zemo did in Civil War to those Winter Soldiers!" But everyone else was against killing all those people. But they do use them to protect their people (thinking it was Octavia and Wonkru in trouble) on the ground.
One of the Prisoners woke up somehow and a brawl ensues. Bellamy is beaten and so is Raven. The big guy will not go down easy. Then Echo comes rolling in with a sword and that barely takes him down. This worries the group more about the other sleeping Prisoners.
Raven stays behind to keep them under check and so does Murphy. However, he only stays thinking he can get back on the ground. But Raven reveals she lied about an extra escape pod, leaving them both to most likely die in space. Their friendship is the most interesting one considering how they started in the beginning and how they play off each other is excellent.
Emori and Murphy are still separated. I loved them as a couple, and it's hard seeing them so stubborn with each other. She even volunteered him to stay behind first without hesitation. They don't even say goodbye to each other, but he makes fun of her flying skills.
What could've went wrong? I blame Murphy and I'm sure he blames himself too.
Everyone is back on the ground except Murphy and Raven. The Prisoners find them but are swiftly killed by Madi, who recognizes Bellamy. She reveals to the group that Clarke is alive and they team up to save her.
This alerts Diyoza, thinking Clarke lied about her people. She tortures Clarke for "lying" and puts a shock collar on her. They electrocute her and punish her out of sheer enjoyment. These prisoners are true monsters, even worse than the Grounders.
I got serious Negan vibes watching that scene because everyone laughed at her torment. Clarke isn't my favorite character, but seeing her get shocked repeatedly hurt my soul because nobody deserves that.
Bellamy rolls in and attempts to bargain with Diyoza to save Clarke by holding her frozen people hostage. He shows a coffee mug from their spaceship as proof he isn't lying. The looks on Bellamy and Clarke when they see each other is quite wonderful.
"She must be pretty important to you." - Diyoza
"She is." - Bellamy
This small exchange must have gotten all the Bellarke feelings stirred up. It got me too because despite your personal feelings about the romantic aspect, these two have been through a lot and hold a special bond with each other.
I don't know if the team can get out of this one, but it's coming together. Episode 3 and two out of the three separated groups are reunited. I cannot wait until Clarke and Bellamy are reunited properly.
But for now, they got another group of people to slaughter. Just like old times. Looking at you, Mountain Men.
Comment and let's discuss what went down in this episode. My episode review on The Originals will be up tonight as well if you also watch that show.
