Supernatural 13x22 "Exodus" Episode Review
I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick of losing people. After 13 seasons, I'm tired of it. Sam is resurrected but all we get is another emotional Sam-Dean hug, Mary makes a shocking decision that gets reversed, but Lucifer bonds with his son. I enjoyed their interactions and Jack's inner conflict about getting to know his father. But I was mostly present in this episode for Gabriel and Lucifer catching up with each other.
But let's get into the specifics. Spoilers ahead!
Picking up where we left off, the Winchesters are reunited but are displeased to find Lucifer in the mix. He informs the group he is here to bond with Jack and wants to help defeat Alt. Michael. The team restrains him after Gabriel refuses to kill him and forbid any interaction.
This goes totally ignored when Lucifer speaks to Jack anyway against Castiel's advice. Jack is here to listen because he has questions about his origins, which is understandable. The kid deserves to know his father, even if he's evil incarnate.
Lucifer tries to make himself look like a victim, telling Jack about God locking him away in the Cage, how humans are corrupted, etc. I feel like he's told this story like a hundred times. Gabriel keeps correcting these lies or half-truths and tells him he was simply jealous of the humans, which is why he keeps trash-talking us so bad.
A single tear rolls down Lucifer's eye, revealing his frustrations and insecurities. Gabriel knows Lucifer best, which is why I'm glad they got another chance to play off each other as foils. I missed Gabriel so much. We need more moments like this in the show.
Mary tells the boys she wants to stay and fight Alt. Michael. She does not want to abandon these people to a hopeless world. Sam and Dean are upset. Correction: Dean is furious because they wasted a good chunk of season 13 to bring her home, and she decides to stay?
SAM LITERALLY DIED FOR YOU, MARY! BUT I GUESS THAT DOESN'T MATTER TO YOU!
It didn't matter to us fans either, so who are we to judge?
But Sam comes up with a solution that convinces her to leave with them. He suggests bringing other survivors to their Earth to use the resources at the bunker and then come back to fight Alt. Michael. It'll also generate more story with familiar characters like Charlie 2.0 and Alt. Bobby.
Alt. Bobby is a great addition to the show and I hope we see more of him in future seasons because we need him. I miss original Bobby, and the nostalgia is there in his dialogue: "it's good to see you again, boys" holds a lot of value for committed fans.
The team also goes on a rescue mission. Ketch and Charlie 2.0 get kidnapped by Evil Castiel!
THERE IS A GERMAN-ACCENTED CASTIEL WHAT IN APOCALYPSE WORLD?
Misha Collins knows how to act. The accent, the body gestures, the twitch thing he did with his mouth... that's some A-class acting there. Unfortunately, this Castiel gets killed by our Castiel.
I would've loved to see more of this evil one around. Maybe Alt. God will resurrect him.
When Dean made Lucifer the default bus driver for their trip back to the rift, I don't know why, but I loved that. Dean fixing the engine and giving the Devil hand gestures to test it made me giddy for how far this show has come.
Alt. Michael makes a flashy comet entrance when mostly everyone except Dean, Sam, Gabriel, and Lucifer gets through the rift. He's getting set-up as main villain for next season. I hope he is because we simply did not get enough time with this archangel.
All I got from him is: he's powerful, power-hungry, and wants to rule another world. That's it. We need more than that.
But he "killed" Gabriel. I put that in quotes because we've been on this ride for so long. The close-up on Gabriel's face tells me he may have pulled off another fake death routine. Because the writers wouldn't just bring him back to kill him again, right? That's just... You can't do that.
The rift closes and only two archangels get left behind in Apocalypse World (three if we're counting on Gabriel pulling a fast one on us again). Sam pushes a weakened Lucifer down to the ground before jumping through.
The betrayal leads to an alliance between Alt. Michael and Lucifer. Next episode we shall see them return for the (hopefully) explosive season finale.
Jensen Ackles gets to play another character for once. Predictably it will be OG Michael or the Alt. Michael. I wanna put my money on the OG Michael because Adam's situation needs to get addressed, but I don't think that's likely.
Side note: Mary punching Lucifer in the face was really satisfying. Those two need to get paired up more often.
