The Originals 5x05 "Don't It Just Break Your Heart" Episode Review
Hey everybody! Apologies for the late delay! The website I usually used to stream the newest episode didn't have it ready, and I had to wait until this morning to watch it. I enjoyed the episode for what it was and went super nerd on the The Vampire Diaries references that occurred.
But enough talk. Let's get down to business.
Spoilers incoming! Watch out!
Three storylines went down tonight. Don't worry they came together in the end:
Klaus and Marcel track down the enemy vampires who took Hayley.
Elijah learns about Antoinette's past.
Hope/Freya and Hope/Roman drama in Mystic Falls.
Each of these storylines are connected through certain characters and one big flashback story to 1930s Germany.
Picking up where we left off in last week's episode, Klaus receives a familiar coin and immediately goes after the werewolves. It doesn't take long for Klaus to figure out who sent the message... because Greta confesses to him. The new character who Marcel really disliked.
Greta is taken to the dungeon and drained of her blood. Klaus and Marcel want to drain the vervain so they can compel her to tell them everything they want to know about the missing Hayley. Klaus gives her chances to talk without compulsion, but instead Greta delivers a cryptic clue relating to his time in 1930s Germany.
For those who keep track of the TVD timeline like myself, this is where Klaus ends up after his 1920s Chicago adventure with Stefan Salvatore and Rebekah.
Whenever Klaus or Elijah mentioned Stefan and their time in Chicago, I got sad. It reminds us how far this show has come and how Stefan's death continues to haunt us. And the flashback episode to that time is one of my favorites: it was the first time we met Rebekah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries! Love at first sight.
Klaus is enjoying the art and the woman and belittling a small time vampire artist. Elijah finds his brother and has a short-lived reunion, warning him about the werewolf massacres. They haven't seen each other in 14 years, when their father Mikael ran the Mikaelson Family out of New Orleans.
Seeing this overprotective OG Elijah made me realize how much I prefer the new Elijah. However, my feelings for the old Elijah are there, and my hopes for a merger of the two personalities is not that far-fetching. It worked out for Connor on Angel! Come on!
Back to the review:
Elijah believes Mikael is behind the attacks or the alternative: Klaus himself. Klaus assures his brother he isn't behind the attacks and corner August Muller, the small time vampire artist. They warn August not to cross them, and he obeys for the time being, telling his daughter to leave with him.
His daughter is... ANTOINETTE!
This is how the Elijah and Antoinette story factors in. New Elijah is loving life without a daylight ring but is hurt when he discovers Antoinette and old Elijah knew each other. Her family had sent stalkers to keep an eye on her and won't rest until she returns to them. He considers leaving her behind because she lied to him again about the past.
UNTIL Antoinette tells Elijah how she fell in love with him back then! WHAT?
Turns out Elijah and Antoinette traded words during the flashback story.
He gave her the only chance to escape her horrible family and found his way into her heart. Elijah Mikaelson is the reason she gained her freedom in the Americas and how she found him in New York was like her way of repaying him for what he did. Then along the way, he fell in love with her of his own accord.
Elijah and Antoinette's love story is one I have truly invested in. The perfect and honorable kind he deserved. Antoinette is classier than Katherine Pierce, more stable than Sabine, and more compatible for him than Hayley. Gia was a worthy love interest, so no words will be said about her... RIP good character taken from us too soon.
The point is... These two belong together. I want them to stay together until the end of the series. Hell give us a wedding with all the Mikaelsons in attendance. I'm already picturing their happy ending and have gone off-track.
Greta wants one thing in exchange for Hayley's safety: she wants Hope to get cursed and to have her werewolf side sealed. That's right! The hybrid curse is back in play! The one Klaus suffered through for 1000 years until the end of TVD's second season.
Greta does not want Hope to create any more hybrids, to keep the purity of vampires safe. This is understandable because she lost a friend (RIP Poppy) and is afraid of crossbreeds.
Klaus doesn't want Hope burdened like him with this curse. Marcel thinks Hope should weigh in because she has rights, but Klaus will not want her sacrificing any part of her. Klaus wants to find another way to save Hayley.
He talks with Greta again, but she only talks about how August's crusade has grown over the years. Klaus has no idea how many of them are out there. This frustrates Klaus! He is getting nowhere with her.
Josh talks to Greta too and wants her to let Hayley go. Greta tries to sway Josh to her side, saying that Hope getting cursed would solve all their problems. He relates this over to Marcel, who is not pleased with Josh talking to Greta.
Marcel calls Freya about Hope's options.
Hope is showing Freya what she can do physically. I love how we're finally getting exploration on the youngest Mikaelson's abilities beside witchcraft and hybrid-making. She claims her super jumping is nothing compared to what she can do once her werewolf curse is activated.
She is not looking forward to the killing a human part or the monthly transformations. This conversation implies she will retain her magical abilities even if she becomes werewolf... I wonder if she dies, will she become a vampire? So many unanswered questions.
Roman is waiting for her when she gets back to her dorm. She wonders why he's here and his interest in her.
I DID NOT LIKE HIS RESPONSE!
He told her it was because she was related to Klaus, royal werewolves, and a bunch of witches. But you knew her as Hope Marshall most of the time? What did you like about her before you found out, Roman? EXPOSED!
The young vampire does get to talking about how he desiccated once. She wanted to get to know him better, and he shared. They're bonding!
Freya tells Hope about the deal to save Hayley. She agrees to save her mother by cursing her werewolf side. She claims to have three sides and losing one shouldn't be a big deal. But Freya warns her niece that this may kill her. Then Freya prepares the ritual and whips out a moonstone.
Ah. The moonstone. How we missed you.
Learning she may die, Hope goes to visit Roman in the Salvatore Library! The fireplace, the bookshelves. The nostalgia is real, and I can't wait to explore more of this old/new setting in Legacies, Hope's spin-off show!
She plants one on him and another one to shut him up! This is her first kiss too! Roman is not allowed to bring that up.
Hope bleeds out in a huge bowl, cutting into her hand over and over again. Stupid annoying healing factor! This is the second time you got in the way for a spell! The moonstone is soaked in her blood and is put over a fire. Freya has to brand Hope on various parts of her body using the super-hot moonstone.
I can imagine how this must have hurt Klaus a thousand years ago.
But Klaus interferes before any branding is done. He figured out they might pull something like this based on past betrayals. An interesting way to put it considering all the secret scheming done on this show. Klaus lays down the law with Freya and Hope before speeding out with his daughter's blood bowel.
This scene matches with a flashback one involving Elijah and Klaus centered around the hybrid curse. It is heartbreaking because we are reminded about Klaus' cursed state and his inability to help his own kind (the werewolves). August is the one massacring the wolves, and Klaus wants to stop him.
Elijah cautions his brother to leave town before Mikael shows up to kill them. This angers Klaus because it brings up how Elijah held him down when Esther cursed his werewolf side. He believes Elijah does not accept his werewolf half and wants to dagger him like Rebekah.
This is news to Elijah! He believed Rebekah to be in Chicago with Stefan. Klaus went as far as to write fake letters to keep up appearances. This is way too cruel. Elijah leaves his brother to do whatever he wants after hearing what he did to their sister.
Back to the present day.
Klaus uses his daughter's blood to create more hybrids as punishment for what Greta did.
But Greta is not giving up. She breaks out of her restraints somehow and brutally beats Josh with the spikes pinned in her hands. This was hard to watch! Josh is such a sweetheart. I hope his face heals... But he survived and she escapes.
Klaus and Marcel have a discussion about what happened. They each admit to their faults: Klaus is spiraling without Elijah and Marcel is too heartbroken over Rebekah.
Then we get one final glimpse into how Klaus ripped August's heart out. Here we thought he was the final villain, but he's simply the martyr. Klaus offers the rest of his people a chance to survive with one coin: the same one delivered to him. Whoever picks it up will live.
I immediately remember the big fight back in season one episode eight. The greatest vampire brawl ever! Klaus vs Marcel's army. The coin concept got an origin story, a much appreciated one.
After Klaus kills everyone, he notices a woman picking up the coin. It's Greta who begs for mercy. Then she asks for her daughter, Antoinette and her son Roman!
All the new characters introduced with accents are related to each other! I figured Roman was related to Antoinette like I mentioned last week, but I thought Greta was too predictable. Sometimes I forget shows are allowed to go down the predictability route.
Hope and Roman are going on a road trip! This isn't good because now we know he isn't trustworthy. He claims he knows a witch who can perform the curse on Hope, but who knows where he's really taking her!
Guess we'll find out in two weeks.
Comment below and let me know how we're going to cope without this show for two weeks. I need legit advice because I'm gonna go crazy!
