The 100 5x04 "Pandora's Box" Review
The 100 delivered the whole team except Madi and friends hiding in the woods. We got Clarke and Bellamy, Wonkru, Raven+Murphy, and the Prisoners all in one episode. While not as strong as the previous episodes in my opinion, this episode was essential in putting together all the major characters to deal with the new threat to their home.
Just like any other season, it's gonna be full-on war to protecting each other's peoples.
Spoilers ahead:
The episode picks up where we left off in episode 2 "Red Queen", Octavia rules the bunker and has thrown Kane in the arena to fight. He has taken the blame for stealing medicine and wins the first round. But he has to fight tomorrow too because he is not forgiven for the crime.
Abby tries to confess, but Kane and Indra refuse to let her. Octavia also knows Kane did not steal the pills but doesn't know it was Abby. Kane wants Octavia to change the way she leads, but she doesn't listen to him and does not want to talk about the "dark year" either.
Without the context of the "dark year", I'm not sure who to side with on this debate. On one hand, Kane is right about losing themselves to these gladiator fights, but on the other hand, Octavia has everyone rallied and under control.
It's not surprising Indra sided with Kane though. They have always shared a special friendship. She cares about both Octavia and Kane and does the best she can in the situation.
Above ground where we left off in episode 3 "Sleeping Giants", Bellamy is dealing with the Prisoners. Diyoza gets confirmation that her frozen people are in trouble and accepts his terms. Bellamy wants their help in freeing the bunker and in exchange, he will let their people go. Afterwards, they will try to live peacefully together.
This kind of deal never works out for them, but it's the best they can do right now. Diyoza allows Bellamy to visit Clarke, and they share a sweet hug. This embrace convinces Clarke that he's really here, and I found it heartwarming. They may never get together romantically, but they share a strong friendship with each other.
Clarke is relieved to hear everyone survived in space, including Echo and Emori. Bellamy radios Raven and Murphy, telling them about the new deal he made and to inform them about Clarke surviving on the ground.
While they didn't reunite physically, you see how happy everyone is to talk to each other. Murphy even makes a joke about how she's more of a cockroach than he is. I will never get over how John Murphy survived past season one.
Raven is overjoyed to learn Clarke survived and thanks her for getting them to safety. They have come so far in this show. It's almost forgettable that the show tried to make them romantic rivals over a boy when they first met.
The Prisoners fight among themselves about the deal, but Driyoza tells her people that they need the doctor (Clarke's mother) for undisclosed reasons involving a cure. I'm going to assume they're all dying of some illness or a majority of them are.
It might also tie into the encrypted file Raven can't access. She can access 1, 2, and 4 (Prisoners are file 4) but not 3. Raven is also struggling with killing 283 people because morals, but Murphy promises to shoulder the burden if it comes down to it. Then they get to bonding and play soccer on the spaceship. Their friendship is the best!
Right before Octavia can finish off Kane for refusing to fight, the bunker's ceiling is blown right open, letting the sunshine in. Bellamy zips down and reunites with his sister. She forgets all about the Blodreina facade and runs into her brother's arms. Clarke also comes down for her mother but finds herself confused about the gladiator fight.
Clarke and Octavia share a brief reunion as well. I have a feeling they will clash about their new leadership roles in the future, but everyone is too happy about being with each other to care about that stuff.
Octavia is skeptical about the Prisoners, but Bellamy assures her that he has everything under control. Clarke reunites with her mother, and Indra informs Abby that Kane is alive for the time being. This is the perfect opportunity for them all to make it out alive.
Once everyone gets to the surface, Indra gives Kane the key to his cuffs but warns him he is on his own after this. Clarke is sort of caught up on the situation, but before they can do anything about it, an explosion occurs.
Driyoza has taken control back on the spaceship and tries to kill Raven and Murphy. By opening some doors, those two would eventually run out of oxygen. But instead of pulling the plug, they decide to save themselves by waking up all 283 people!!
That's insane! Because if those doors stay open, their people will die too. So Driyoza closes the doors, but now Raven and Murphy are captives.
"Survival instinct sucks!" - Raven
Yeah the Prisoners even called them cowards for what they did. But now they have the leverage and back out of the deal with Bellamy. They want to claim the Valley, the only survivable land left, and kidnap Abby and Kane. Well, Abby gave herself up to save her people and wants to bring Kane to get away from Octavia.
She declares them traitors for such an act. Grounder politics... How I've missed you.
As they attempt to leave without hurting anybody, one of Driyoza's people blasts Octavia and some of Wonkru, initiating war! Octavia is hurt and Driyoza is pissed. She did not want to kill them but now she has to using some missiles because they will come for retribution.
But Raven locked them out of their missiles. Another reason to keep Raven and Murphy alive! For now, Driyoza retreats back to the spaceship in the sky but the man who shot Octavia is killed for what he did.
Blodreina wants to go to war against the Prisoners, but Bellamy may have to convince his sister that war may not be the best approach.
This episode established the dynamics and politics we'll deal with moving forward. We have some missing information here involving the "dark year", file number 3, and why the Prisoners want Abby's doctoral skills, but I'm sure this will become clear as we continue into the season.
Comment and let me know how we're feeling. Bellarke and Octavia/Bellamy reunions are the best. I love how far those relationships have gone in the past five seasons. This show ironically has a lot of life in it.
