Supernatural 13x23 "Let the Good Times Roll" Episode Review
Remember when I trashed season 13 for like the longest time? I stand by all that criticism, but this season finale delivered the PIE! It was like an alternative take on season five. If Adam and OG Michael returned somehow, I think it would've been a perfect way to end the season. But we got what we got, and it was completely satisfying.
I am hyped for season 14 and what it can do. Just don't pull a season 10 and solve the problem in the first three episodes. We loved Demon Dean and what it provided us. The storyline had so much potential.
Season finale spoilers ahead:
Sam is giving a recap to the Apocalypse People on the Main World. Alt. Bobby makes a quip about Trump and how their world is wrongfully called "Apocalypse World". I missed Bobby so much and his relationship with Mary is approved. I want them together. They're so cute!
Everyone is out hunting... which explains the huge absence in the episode. Ketch is hunting, Charlie 2.0 and Rowena are out together (l wish we got to see that), and then Dean, Sam, Castiel, and Jack are hunting down werewolves.
This is a pretty easy job with Jack's powers. He freezes them in place while Sam and Dean light them up with silver bullets. Dean is optimistic about retiring. OMG he is talking about retiring. He thinks with Jack helping them, they have a real shot at ridding the world of evil.
Then he overhears Jack having a nightmare. Daddy Dean is to the rescue! He comforts Jack and confides in him about his own nightmares, the ones about the people he couldn't save. Jack reveals the nightmares are the same and hates himself for not being able to save everyone. Dean tells Jack they're family and we all swooned! Family is the best!
Mary and Alt. Bobby, while out on a stroll, discovers Maggie dead and call the boys. Jack blames himself for this and goes to confront a store clerk whom she had a crush on. Before Jack can impulsively kill the innocent, Dean shoots him a few times in the back to calm him down. He teleports out and screams at the world!
Daddy Lucifer appears and greets his son again. He doesn't explain how he returned but rather why he's here. Lucifer wants to bond with Jack and tells him that Sam is "big fat liar" and "freakishly tall". While Sam did indeed trap him in the other world, Lucifer selectively leaves out the whole "Michael is here too" bit.
Lucifer offers a father-son trip around the stars to escape Earth, which Jack compares to Star Wars. He doesn't want to leave Team Free Will 2.0 behind, but Lucifer manages to get Jack to his side regardless. Jack has one request, and it is to revive Maggie. Ehhhhh.... Lucifer agrees.
Sam, Dean, and Castiel are joined by Alt. Michael at the store. Everyone runs out! Alt. Michael blows up the place and approaches them. Castiel wants to fight, but Sam holds him back, knowing they have no shot at defeating the archangel. Dean throws exploding holy oil to keep Alt. Michael at bay while they high-tail it out of there in the Impala.
Jack returns to the bunker with Lucifer, who awkwardly greets Mary and Alt. Bobby. The two of them call Sam to update him on the situation. Lucifer follows through on Jack's request and resurrects Maggie. Having done this, they leave to explore the stars.
Sam, Dean, and Castiel return too late. Sam has a talk with Maggie and learns who killed her: LUCIFER. Did we have any doubts? The bunker goes into panic mode when Alt. Michael busts the door down. Mary, Alt. Bobby, and Maggie escape through the garage.
Everyone loses to Alt. Michael badly. He chokes Dean slowly so he enjoy his death. Sam desperately prays to Jack for help as he helplessly watches his brother die. Jack hears the pray and manages to save Dean in time.
Alt. Michael starts bleeding through his eyes and ears, barely able to stand. Lucifer gives a "whoa" and that means it's impressive even to him. Jack is definitely a powerful one.
Lucifer follows and urges his son to leave before Alt. Michael can confess to the deal. But it's too late! After Jack weakened the archangel, he admits to the deal he made with The Devil. Once they passed the rift, Lucifer gets Jack, and Alt. Michael gets everything else.
Dean and Sam confirm the deal to Jack, who is furious once he learns Lucifer is the one who killed Maggie as well. He effectively disowns Lucifer, who throws the biggest temper tantrum of all time. Maybe Chuck had a point in locking this guy in the cage.
He belittles everyone on how nice he tried to be and slashes Jack's throat. Lucifer absorbs Jack's grace and becomes super powerful. He grabs Jack and teleports, but Sam jumps in, getting taken as well.
Castiel and Dean scramble on how to defeat Lucifer. He was hard enough to kill, but with Jack's power coursing through him, he can destroy the whole universe. Alt. Michael is in no condition to fight, but Dean offers the unthinkable: his body! Dean is Michael's true vessel, and if they work together, they'd have a shot at defeating Lucifer.
But Dean has conditions: he is in charge (Alt. Michael is the engine, but Dean is behind the wheel). Alt. Michael agrees, but Castiel is against this idea. Dean has no other choice. It's the only way to stop Lucifer and save Sam and Jack.
Lucifer takes Sam and Jack to the church. The same church where the portal to his cage is. They don't address that in the episode, but whatever. He is done playing nice with his son and toys with him instead. He drops his archangel blade and wants Jack and Sam to fight.
Sam refuses and offers to die. Jack has the same thoughts and starts stabbing himself.
THEN DEAN ARRIVES IN HIS ARCHANGEL GLORY! My new background for my computer is here!
Dean arms himself with his own archangel blade and the ultimate battle begins. This could've been the season five finale: two archangel brothers fighting to the death. Lucifer gains the upper hand and has more than enough power to smite Dean/Michael. He doesn't need the archangel blade.
Sam tosses the blade to Dean, who stabs The Devil right in the stomach. Lucifer cries out and dies! RIP LUCI!! I'm going to miss the character a lot, but it is super satisfying seeing the son of the bitch get killed. Mark Pellegrino brought great energy to the character, and he will surely be missed. Thanks for a great run as The Devil.
Now only OG Michael and Adam remain inside the Cage. Let's have them become the final villains when the show comes to an end. Okay?
Sam, Dean, and Jack celebrate the biggest victory! Then Alt. Michael ruins the fun and betrays Dean, going back on his word. He has taken over Dean's body permanently and disappears.
Castiel, Mary, and Alt. Bobby wait for the boys to return. They have no idea!
The season ends with Alt. Michael strolling down the streets in new clothes. I love the new look and can't wait to see what Jensen Ackles can bring to this new role. This is the first time he will play another character besides Dean Winchester on this show! Took thirteen years but he's got this!
Season 13 is over. There is a lot of potential stories ready for the next season and new characters to explore! Alt. Bobby and Charlie 2.0 have to stick around! Do not kill them off! Have Alt. Michael stay inside Dean for at least 6-9 episodes. Don't repeat season 10!
Comment and share how we're feeling about the finale? Will Jack get his powers back? I hope so because they'll come in handy to stop Alt. Michael/Dean.
