Station 19 2x05 "Do A Little Harm..." Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please Read with Caution.
The episode had a lot of character development mainly centered around Captain Robert Sullivan. He’s been all business with the Station since we’ve met him in the Season Two Premiere. In this episode, we learn exactly why he’s the way he is, and the friendship he used to share with Chief Ripley.
Robert Sullivan and Chief Ripley used to be best friends. They were like “Dean and Jack” or “Andy and Maya”. The two of them were incredibly close with Sullivan loving the job while Ripley took it more seriously. It was a rare sight to unfold the layers that made them the people they are today full of tension with each other.
Sullivan lost everything 15 years ago. His wife suffered in a car crash and all he could do was panic and let Ripley take care of her. He was too close to this. Ripley did everything he could “by the book”, but he couldn’t save her. Sullivan lost his wife and blames himself for not doing enough… it also broke the friendship he had with Ripley.
The CPR training with the police officers landed on the same day. Chief Ripley stopped by the Station to make sure Sullivan was in the right mindset. He stayed for the entire day to ensure nothing went wrong with his former best friend. He also made eyes at Vic, which Andy noticed.
Andy and Ryan have tension too, but they were the least interesting thing going on.
Maya and Jack competed for a girl’s phone number, which got her in trouble with Sullivan. He was not in the mood for their games. Sullivan belittled Maya for her incompetence and left her feeling bad about herself. When she flirted again, Sullivan stepped in and yelled some more, but Andy stepped up for her friend, telling the Captain that he was out of line.
One of Andy’s best moments… standing up for her best friend!
So glad there was no more Andy-Maya drama in this episode. They’re supporting each other, not tearing each other down. Something even Sullivan acknowledged. He wants the girls to keep the friendship going because it’s a rare thing to have.
Dean is worried about Jack, who isn’t sleeping well and rearranging everything in the boat house. It is also his birthday, but he hates it. Jack has no boundaries either. He opens the birthday present and proceeds to put on the watch… haha what? This dude.
I also died of laughter when Sullivan said, “screw your birthday”… like wow the guy doesn’t care about his birthday but crap… cool off there.
We learn Dean hates his birthday because his family wants him to join the family business. They do not approve of his firefighting job and will cut him off entirely if he continues “disrespecting” them like this. This is sad. I’m feeling for the guy.
Ben and Miranda stayed at home in this episode. The “stress” storyline from the latest Grey’s Anatomy episode passed over to this spin-off. Miranda confesses her stress comes from Ben having this job and that she needs a break from their marriage. The stress is getting to her to the point of actual medical concern, and if he wasn’t home, then she didn’t have to worry if something happened to him.
This hurts so much. They are perfect for each other and seeing them separate was not easy to watch. Ben walks out of the house, but he kisses Miranda goodbye. Hopefully, he moves into Dean’s boat house. There is so much room there, and this separation gives Ben the chance to invest in his Station 19 home more.
