Supernatural 14x04 "Mint Condition" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
This Halloween special episode was pure joy with a good amount of horror. It didn’t advance the plot by a whole lot, but we’re here for the characters and horror movie homages, not whatever Alternate Michael is up to! Right? Who cares? We got an episode that enters into October 31 and ends nicely on November 1.
We got Red Hood, Scooby Doo, Hell Hazers, and a bunch of other references that us super- fans appreciated. The monster-of-the-week was a spirit possessing these action figures and statues to kill a nerd for stealing from his story. You know, the basic story that was structured to honor the slasher movies of the 80’s.
Dean goes to his childhood horror movies for comfort. A defense mechanism to overcome the troubled feelings he has over Michael possessing him and his guilt over letting that happen. Sam tries to help him through it and even confesses why he hates Halloween… why are Sam’s stories so human? First his fear of clowns, and this embarrassing story of how he puked all over the girl he crushed on in sixth grade… at a Halloween Party.
RIP to Sam’s beard by the way. I will miss you, Sam’s beard that rested on Sam’s face that made him look 100% better. I hate Dean for making him shave it off.
I did appreciate the small moments in the episode like Sam trying to break the glass door or picking the lock, and Dean’s last minute decision to open the emergency fire axe instead of breaking the glass.
This was “fun”. That’s all I can say to a show that’s been on the air for the past 14 years.
