Legacies 1x02 "Some People Just Want to Watch the World Burn" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with Caution.
After watching this episode, I’m convinced this series is worth investing your time in. Mystic Falls has introduced “monster of the week”, and the first monster to appear is a DRAGON! After going on the hunt for Landon Kirby, Hope, Rafael, and Alaric have to deal with the unexpected.
There were wings, fire, talons… It was like watching an episode of Game of Thrones.
Rafael and Hope clash throughout the episode on Landon’s character. Rafael believes Landon has good intentions, but Hope is determined to protect her school and that broken heart of hers. The character tension between these two characters is vivid and full of angst. This leads her to do black magic, which gets her in trouble with Alaric.
Alaric lectures Hope on the use of black magic and how he won’t allow her to “become like her father”. This pains Hope, who looks over the pictures of her family by episode’s end. The photo of Young Hope with the Mikaelson Family and another picture of the Family from their time in Mystic Falls during Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries.
Lizzie and Josie are back at the Salvatore School to play football against the Timber Wolves. Alaric entrusts his daughters to “keep up appearances” with MG and new character Caleb. However, Lizzie clashes with human Dana and lets the competition get to her. She and Josie siphon off the team and perform magic to gain the advantage.
I enjoyed Lizzie’s scenes a lot in this episode. She is starting to get fleshed out, and the tension between her and Josie starts to reach the surface beyond Rafael. Penelope adds to the flames by using MG’s crush on Lizzie to “watch the world burn”… the title of the episode.
The world-building on an established setting (Mystic Falls) was honestly refreshing. We got how the Salvatore School fits in the town, and what the townsfolk think of the kids who go there. Keeping the secret of the supernatural is important for their protection and Alaric’s approval, which is why Josie uses her magic to make them lose the game.
Rafael and Landon end up ditching Alaric and Hope but leave the knife and promises to keep the school a secret. The mystery of Landon lingers and hopefully will be explored in future episodes. We didn’t get complete answers on why he stole the knife or why he lied to Hope, which he regrets doing.
The Gargoyle is next week’s monster. Jeremy Gilbert will also make an appearance too! Yes! I’m here for the expanding TVDU! Let’s do it, Hope Mikaelson!
