The Good Place 3x09 "Don't Let The Good Life Pass You By" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
We finally met him. The man who cracked the code of the afterlife and its point system. The framed photo we saw all the way back in the Pilot and inside Michael’s office.
Doug Forcett has arrived, the poster child of The Good Place, or at least the bad version of it, The Neighborhood. I enjoyed the actor’s performance and his take on living life. In order to live the perfect life and get into heaven, he has to make himself misery.
Michael and Janet pay a visit to him in Canada to get the blueprint of how the point system works. It’s a rigorous and possibly fixed point system to let only a handful of people inside.
The man lives alone in the woods, drinks his own pee, eats only food he grows himself, and lets kids take advantage of him. Doug is quite sensitive too. He calls Michael the wrong name and freaks over the amount of points he lost.
The LOST homage was also appreciated. I am a LOST fan and the opening scene had me thinking, “I’ve seen this somewhere before.” It wasn’t clear why until I did some research.
Eleanor, Tahani, Jason, and Chidi are waiting at the bar for Michael and Janet. The conversation between Eleanor and Tahani was classic… a burn to Eleanor’s voice and sound advice on what to do about Chidi. Then the demons come rolling in to capture them.
Since Eleanor regained some of her memories, she recognized them and tried to get everyone to escape. Michael and Janet return to save the day—specifically Janet swoops in and knocks the demons’ on their asses. For the sitcom, the fight scene was really well-done.
In the heat of the moment, Eleanor tells Chidi that they were in love in one of the reboots, and she might be in love with him now. This is a lot to process, and he is speechless. I’d be too if I was given all of this information during a demon brawl.
Going to Janet’s void was an interesting next move. After three seasons of Janet popping in and out of there, I can’t wait to see how the show tackles this setting. Of course, they’re going to die first. Poor Chidi. Didn’t even get the chance to get confirmation.
