How To Get Away With Murder 5x08 "I Want To Love You Until The Day I Die" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Episode Review. Please Read With Caution.
The twists were well-executed in the Winter Finale. I honestly did not see most of them coming. I was unimpressed for the past few episodes of this season, but with how everything went down, it’s almost worth the wait. I stress almost because while the twist was good, a lot of what lead up to it in previous episodes… were not.
The “Bonnie and her child” red herring had most of us going for most of the season, and even the idea of it being Annalise’s kid was an idea we could’ve hopped on board with, but when the truth came out… My jaw dropped and so did my remote control because I knocked it over. Maybe it was the right call to keep the truth from Annalise… This is her worst nightmare.
Okay. I’m about to drop the bomb… if you don’t want to know, exit now… alright. Still here?
Gabriel Maddox is… ahhhh…. Sam Keating’s son! Earlier in the episode, we learn or reminded that Annalise was the “other woman” and didn’t have a “white” wedding. So, the strength of the reveal was enhanced with this loaded information because I’m convinced Gabriel wants revenge on Annalise and Wes for his dad’s death.
But Wes is dead… How can he get revenge on him? Through Laurel and Baby Christopher.
I’m getting off track, let’s get to who got killed in the mid-season finale. This scene and reveal was also good because he wasn’t even on the list. It was DA Miller who got beaten to death… despite us seeing him in the flash forward. It was a well-executed trick that was helped with flashbacks to fill the blanks.
Nate Lahey beat Miller to death… Giving into the rage like his father did all those years ago to that guard. Like father like son. The blood, the punches, and Nate’s anger was an emotionally raw performance. I was feeling the emotion with every splash of blood. It was hard to watch what happened next… Bonnie showing up and finishing the job. She had to protect Nate to protect Annalise.
The love triangle died when she chose Annalise over Miller. It gave her anguish to do this to the man she loved, but it was something that had to be done. Poor Bonnie. Her love for Annalise will lead to her undoing someday.
Connor and Oliver got married! Turns out Oliver’s disappearance was another red herring. He vanished to talk to his dad over Face Time and ends up doing a grand gesture for his beloved husband. He sings, flexing his Broadway vocals, and everyone is moved by how beautiful he sounded, including the audience. The scenes in conjunction with this song were haunting to say the least.
I can’t promise if I’ll resume the episode reviews after this. This show is one of the few I’m considering cutting out of my blogging schedule in the new year. But I will review ones that really catch my attention like this mid-season finale. Until then, I have other reviews you can check out if you’re an avid watcher like me.
