Station 19 2x02 "Under the Surface" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review.
This episode is part two of the crossover and resolves what happened to Max after he ran away from Grey’s Anatomy. The link to my Grey’s Anatomy crossover review is here if you want to check it out before diving into this review.
Andy and Dean are still at the hospital when they learn Max has run away. They get deployed to find him and so do the police force. Ryan and his partner spot Max running on the street but before they could catch him, he fell into the sewer! I’m so scared for him and Ryan is pissed that the situation escalated into “Search and Rescue”!
Captain Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe) is an “all-business” firefighter Captain. He does not join the team for breakfast and does routine uniform checks in the middle of the shifts. Having Travis interrupt him during this checkup showed how much tension is really there for everyone involved. Warren is also taken off-duty and assigned to desk because of his hand injury.
Kodjoe’s performance as Sullivan is excellent. As a series regular, he is already shaking up the status quo and helping the Station keep on their toes. I’m really liking his dynamic with Andy and how he knew Spanish, so he was keeping track of all her back talking this entire time. The new Captain is also aware of his behavior and doesn’t join them for breakfast due to it. He wants to give him breathing time.
Andy plans to move out of her dad’s house and into Maya’s to get some space. She also broke up with Ryan because things got complicated. Jack tries to be friend toward Ryan later in the episode about it, but it doesn’t go over very well between them.
Maggie and DeLuca (Grey’s Anatomy characters) make the jump to the show to help Max because they feel responsible and want to help. DeLuca lost him in the last episode and Maggie wants to help him in case Max needs immediate medical attention.
DeLuca is paired with Vic and they are hitting off pretty well. She calls him “DeLukes” and he helps her get a phone number from a cute guy from a different fire station. Maggie is paired with Dean and has to shoot him down because she has Jackson.
Captain Sullivan has Travis, Pruitt, and Warren work the maps off scene to locate Max’s route before he drowns in the pipes. They manage to isolate him, but before Maya can properly gear up to save Max, Andy jumps in and tries to play hero. This ends up failing, and the team wastes time pulling her back up.
This causes friction between the two friends. Maya thinks Andy couldn’t handle being sidelined and had to prove herself at the expense of her. This leaves them in uncharted territory because they’re moving in together. IF that’s even happening anymore.
Max is ultimately saved thanks to his dad’s truth speech. They were close to losing him to the pipes. But, the mother is lost. She did not survive, which is what Max needed to prepare for.
What a sad but sweet ending for this family.
This was the second episode of the season but also part two of an organic crossover. Station 19 is gradually building their characters and allowing them to seamlessly move between the shows without it feeling forced. As long as Ben Warren is over at the station and the unspoken bond between Andy and Meredith continues, these crossovers are more than welcomed.
