Season 4 Episode 3 was campy. The more we play Dungeons & Dragons, the more comfort we’re getting with everything going on. Unlike the K-Krew Saga, these characters are more focused on making quick money and a successful business than saving the multiverse from the coming Apocalypse with Tiamat.
It’s honestly a good thing and an effective way to break from that plotline without actually breaking, due to the overarching plot about Mas O wanting to get his Dragon Egg from the law firm Wolfram Hart. Since that lawsuit trial isn’t happening for three months within the D&D timeline, the players are working on building their reputation.
The session picks up with James Blondie making himself at home with the players based on the events of the previous session. James Blondie is based on Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Klaus Mikaelson from The Originals, so the players had a fun time zapping him in the brain multiple times. James Blondie was mostly used for gags and manual labor throughout this session. Mas O also used him to train down in the Hotel’s basement.
Eira was trying to make his music career better with his regular Pizza gig, but Digit and Chibi almost ruined it when they instigated an incident with a mom and her dog. Chibi hates dogs because he’s a cat, and Eira was getting fed up with these two characters almost ruining his business with John the Pizza Manager. Digit also acted like a lawyer—studying to become one—and tried to act like he was in charge of the Pizza Joint, which wasn’t helping anyone with the situation. This was pretty hilarious to DM, as John told Eira that they may have to rework their initial agreement.
Also, Eira had gotten over his crush on Kya—their secretary—when she was found “hanging out” with one of the dads at the Pizza Joint. The children were surprisingly innocent about everything adult going on. Anyway, the players decided to head out after the gig to buy more weapons and supplies for the Hotel. Everything happening in this session was pure madness, which was made worse when they went to Got-Ham’s casino and made enemies with Cat Gamblers.
The Cat Gamblers used cats as chips in their games, making them official animal abusers. Chibi didn’t like that and wanted to win all the cats—which equaled gold pieces in the casino—back from the Cat Gamblers. There was illegal cage animal fighting too.
Chibi, however, didn’t realize he would be fighting against six Tiger Fighters with unique skills. Technically, it was a free-for-all battle royale type fight, but the Cat Gamblers told their Fighters to work together first against Chibi. With the secret help of his teammates though, Chibi held his own against the six Tigers and ended up blasting a fire breath on them all six. They surrendered soon after once Digit managed to secure the bomb remote from one of the Cat Gamblers.
As a result of a bomb threat, everyone in the casino freaked out and ran the hell out of there. The Six Tigers stopped fighting and disappeared Shinobi style, vowing to meet Chibi again with more honor. The players also stole the pot—the 85,000 gold pieces they were betting—and got rich fast. The casino ended up closing indefinitely due to the bomb threat. After finishing this up, Digit went back to the Hotel and began “Minecrafting” the basement for a better hero lair.
Chibi and Eira went to a car dealership—after making a pitstop at Got-Ham’s IKEA—for a new ride. Eira also managed to convince Casey to go on a date with him, wanting to teach her Guitar back at the Hotel. Chibi and Eira bought new motorcycles and ended up putting the payment plan on a local group called the Dog-Eating Gang. They didn’t have the 100,000 Gold Pieces to afford the vehicles, but they really wanted it. After this, they all went back to the Hotel.
Kya informed everyone—once they were back together—that they had their first guest in a room right now. She charged them 100 gold pieces a night, with Doctor Suresh Jr. paying for 5 nights ahead of time. The name made the players very suspicious, so they decided to check on their new guest and “wife”—someone he refused to let go of.
When the players confronted Doctor Suresh Jr., they learned he was a Chimera and feeding on the woman that was not his wife. The players ended up fighting and paralyzing him—after sending James Blondie in first—and calling the cops to arrest his ass. Detective Kruger came to do the job, and offered the heroes a chance to become their official consultants in exchange for access to GCPD’s data banks on all criminals.
After this, Eira had his date with Casey and ended up having sex with her. Chibi and Digit barged into his room, fully intent on making Eira’s life total hell. This made Eira leave the Hotel with Casey, taking her home. When Eira learned she had female roommates, he decided to flirt his way into another situation. At first, things got awkward when Eira saw one of the roommates was Gobby—a female Goblin and one of EDC’s first clients—but he managed to make her go away to avoid compromising the business.
Eira, Casey, and the other roommate Serena ended up doing “Netflix & Chill”, with Chibi and Digit talking to Eira through text messages and then the communicator. By the end of the session, Eira went to bed with Casey and Serena. The session ended in such a strange way, making this season 4 already vastly different from everything else we’ve tackled so far. I do like the change of pace though from “saving the world” to “building a business and helping people for money mixed with slice of life problems”.
The overarching plot—Mas O’s upcoming trial against Wolfram Hart for the Dragon Egg—is still in effect, so once the plot for that kicks off, things should be getting more interesting. This is still The Rise of Tiamat campaign after all. I’m excited to see all the players’ characters team up for that eventual Avengers: Endgame showdown though. Y’all know it’s coming! See you all in the next episode of my D&D Campaign!
