Season 4 Episode 4 had challenged the players—and me as a DM—in this latest session outside the game. We had a dispute about the mature content happening on the table, but we have since resolved it after a passive aggressive incident took place at the literal end of the session.
An incident that shouldn’t have happened on my watch. Something inexcusable. Something that won’t be tolerated moving forward.
This was a huge lesson for me and the players to have more open communication and set boundaries moving forward into the mid-season finale—season 4 episode 5. Not every game is perfect of course, but we’re learning to do better as a team. I’m still fairly new as a DM—I’ve only been doing this for about a year and a half—so a newbie compared to those who’ve been doing it for decades.
Thanks everyone who’s been silently following my The Rise of Tiamat campaign for the past nine months and supporting my continuous efforts to become a great Dungeon Master for my players. I truly appreciate it. Now let’s talk about the in-game events that went down in the latest session.
The session centered around a murder mystery. After Eira’s one-night stand with Casey and Serena, the police went after Era for Serena’s murder. She was killed the morning after Eira snuck out, and Eira is the prime suspect. The heroes went to work solving this case, despite knowing Eira couldn’t be arrested due to his Pro Hero License. The murder case could harm their reputation though. After questioning Casey and Gobby, they began to piece together what’s been going on. The police chased them a few times, but Eira didn’t want to cooperate with them.
The Dog-Eating Gang may have been involved with this murder, due to Serena’s history with them prior to her death. They went after the DEG, and discovered a vengeful spirit had killed Serena for committing adultery. Serena was technically married—legally separated—when she got together with Eira and Casey. The vengeful spirit called herself Nasty Bitch because that was what she was called before dying. The players teamed up with a shaman to send her back to Hell.
The involvement with the Dog-Eating Gang was too deep though, so the players decided to deal with them too. Apparently, the leader Amon was trying to rid the world of magic using a chi-blocking technique. He was secretly using magic though, so he was a hypocrite. The players killed him and took over the Gang, renaming it the Dog-Slaying Gang. Eira also took over the fan club and converted them to his cult, who gifted him with a brand-new guitar.
Twenty the Goblin also made his return in this session, looking for a place to work under Team EDC Hero Agency. At the same time, a rich man named Pegasus—an actual Pegasus—requested the heroes for a 1,000,000 Gold Piece job involving missing heroes.
The players accepted the case to Warrior Kingdom—Pegasus’s Pro Hero Resort—and had Twenty the Goblin fly them over to the place. Mas O and James Blondie joined the case too, leaving Kya in charge of the Hotel in their absence. They felt confident that things will run smoothly with the Penguins and Dog-Slaying Gang working the local cases in their absence. This was the end of the session.
The recap is shorter in detail than usual due to my memory and the lateness in writing this particular recap, but I hit all the major highlights of what happened in this session. Stay tuned to find out what happens next in my D&D campaign!
