The God of High School Episode 11 “lay / key” Anime Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
“The God of High School is over,” said Park Mujin at the end of this latest episode. Yes, the high school tournament no longer matters, and now we’re in the middle of a war among Gods. After the Jin Mori versus IIpyo concludes with an unexpected twist regarding Jin Mori, everything about the God of High School tournament is done with.
I have to say, that was always the plan, but the breakneck pace to reach that point was utterly ridiculous looking back on the first season as a whole. I recommend reading the Webtoon at this point to see what you’re missing out on if you only watch the anime. The link to my Webtoon reviews and other episode reviews are here.
The animation on IIpyo’s Nine Tail Fox Transformation though—the Naruto vibes—was indeed beautiful. Even the exposition dump on the Nine Tail Fox’s origins at the beginning of the episode was animated beautifully. At least The God of High School was consistent with the animation, so that alone makes the series worth the watch. Honestly, the same reason I stuck it out with the Fate franchise after Fate/Zero. Anyway, back to the episode review.
This latest episode was tight, with every second dedicated to something important or revealing something new about the story. The violence was also amped up to 180 when Jegal Taek made his move and reunited with Park IIpyo. The series went darker.
Overall, The God of High School has entered pure fantasy with monsters and Gods roaming the scenes. I enjoyed the episode for its action sequences, the emotional stakes, the fast pace of the episode, the light and dark character moments, but the anime’s willing separation from its Webtoon source material made me wish they at least kept the original fight’s outcome between Jin Mori and Park IIpyo. The last two episodes should be interesting, and filled with more awe-striking moments. This isn’t The God of High School anymore. This is something else.
