Lucifer Netflix Original Season 5 Part 1 Review
Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with caution.
On August 21, 2020, Lucifer Season 5 Part 1 dropped on Netflix. I binge-watched all eight episodes throughout that weekend and garnered some thoughts. Season 5 picks up couple months after Lucifer decided to leave Earth—and his first love Chloe—in order to take over Hell for everyone’s safety.
While I did enjoy the familiar character dynamics and the new challenges everyone faced this season, there were some shortcomings that made me go, “This might be because we’re only getting half a season and the writers needed to spin their wheels”. I finalized that interesting opinion—the same opinion I had about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2—when I reached Lucifer’s mid-season finale.
Ella Lopez and Maze had interesting character stories, but they weren’t given much screen time to fully explore them. Linda also had something interesting that could’ve connected to her motherhood, but it was used to strengthen Maze’s story instead.
In addition, I also liked the potential Michael—Lucifer’s twin brother—presented for season 5’s narrative, but he wasn’t given enough screen time to “ruin Lucifer’s life on Earth”. As a result, Michael’s role as main antagonist felt flat compared to Eve, Cain, Mother, and Malcolm Graham—the main villains before him. Hopefully, they’re saving Michael’s significance for the second half based on the cliffhanger.
The police procedural structure might be overstaying its welcome at this point. While the appeal was originally nice during the first three seasons, I would much more prefer the celestial narrative and supernatural elements already presented in the show. I also know that Lucifer will never discard the procedural structure because Chloe Decker is a detective.
Speaking of Chloe Decker, her relationship with Lucifer—Deckerstar—continued to hit roadblocks up to their eventual romance, which presented thought-provoking questions regarding free will versus one’s purpose for existing in the world once a certain secret came into light.
Overall, I enjoyed watching the latest episodes, but Lucifer Season 5 Part 1 was practically table setting for what’s coming in the second half. Thanks for reading my season 5 part 1 review, everyone! I’ll see all you Luci-fans when Part 2 drops on Netflix.
