Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 8 “The Children’s Attack on the Fortress” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Digimon Adventure 2020 Reboot finally hit some decent plot and drove it home with some much-needed action. Matt and Gabumon made their grand return in this episode and joined up with the rest of the DigiDestined, as they prepared to lay siege on a heavily guarded fortress. Izzy is still separated from the group in this episode, but he has been updating them regularly on what’s been going on in Tokyo. Hopefully, Izzy and Kabuterimon join up with their friends soon enough in the Digital World.
Matt—acting like his usual loner self—refused to team up with the others and called them dead weight. Gabumon tried to excuse Matt’s rude behavior, saying Matt didn’t want them getting hurt. However, Tai and Sora decided to help him anyway. Joe was the comedic relief in this episode, trying to surrender to the fortress hoping to be spared only to get blasted. Mimi and Joe ended up being distractions to the Tankmon while Tai, Sora, and Matt dive headfirst into the fortress.
The only negative aspect of the episode was learning Tai and Matt were getting the Digivolution sequence treatment while the others weren’t. This was the most apparent whenever Piyomon digivolved and didn’t get said special Digivolution sequence treatment. And she digivolved the most in this episode! Tai and Matt already had special treatment in the original series, so seeing them get favored again was low-key annoying.
The episode overall was somewhat lackluster as a result. Sora and Piyomon deserved more recognition for the work they’ve been putting in these last few episodes, and Matt’s Crest of Friendship glowing in his Digivice didn’t feel earned enough for that power-up to Garurumon’s attack and speed. In the moment, I thought Garurumon was going Ultimate and almost lost it. Although, I do like seeing Matt’s shy side around Mimi and Joe more than his jerk side from the original series.
Hopefully, next week will pick up the plot more now that they found more Holy Digimon lore inside the fortress. Only T.K. and Kari are left. Honestly, I can’t wait to see how they handle their introductions once the plot moves closer to the Holy Digimon.
