Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 7 “That Boy is Joe Kido” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The Digimon Adventure 2020 episodes gets better and better with each passing week. While Izzy and Tentomon are stuck in the Network World, we caught a glimpse of Kari at home watching Tokyo fall apart without the Internet. I’m curious how she’ll play into the series later on with Gatomon and the Holy Digimon lore. Anyway, that was the only sneak peek we got of the bigger plot, as the rest of the episode was dedicated to the latest DigiDestined kid: Joe Kido!
Joe and Gomamon have officially joined the team in this episode. While Taichi, Sora, and Agumon search the ocean with Birdramon’s help—Mimi stayed behind on the beach with Palmon—they are attacked by a Gesomon hiding in a whirlpool. Birdramon is knocked back into Piyomon, thus putting everyone in the dangerous waters. Luckily, Gomamon and his Marching Fishes Attack saved the day.
What I enjoyed most about this episode was the focus on plot and character—which centered around Joe’s struggles to accept his destiny. The DigiDestined have a hard time crossing the ocean with the Gesomon blocking their path, and they have to convince Joe Kido to come with them. Joe’s character is more unhinged and burdened with responsibility in this reboot, as he’d rather focus on his studies than save the Digital World or the Human World. He wanted to focus on being a kid and studying for exams.
I thought addressing this character flaw with Joe—the pressure to become a doctor within a family of doctors—right off the bat was the smart choice. It also established the bond between Joe and Gomamon—an easy-going Digimon—really well. Joe is definitely one of my favorite characters from Digimon Adventure, as his original character story was super relatable. The pressure to live up to family expectations is rough, buddy. Aside from Joe Kido’s character introduction and the battle against Gesomon to cross the ocean, there wasn’t much else going on in this episode.
Next week’s episode shows Matt returning to the show, so hopefully his younger brother T.K. isn’t too far behind either. The plot looks like it’ll start picking up as a result too. I was getting nervous about the slow plot momentum, but next week’s preview has put my worries to rest. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Thanks so much for reading my latest episode review. I’ll see you all in the Digital World soon enough! Let’s kick it up!
