unOrdinary “Joker Arc” (Episode 132 through Episode 155) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
I finished reading season one on June 1, 2020. The first 155 episodes—out of currently 183—were amazing. After the events of the “Capture Arc”, John had enough. He declared that he will bring down the social hierarchy, warning Arlo to enjoy his throne while he still had it. During this arc, John—under his secret identity of “Joker”—defeated Blyke and Cecile mercilessly with their own abilities. Remi knew she was next on Joker’s Royal hit list and prepared herself to stop his rampage. John was no longer the main protagonist I thought he was.
Arlo went under major character development during this arc, reflecting on what he did wrong throughout the first season from his treatment of Seraphina (“Turf War Arc”) to the ambush on John (“Monster Arc”). He realized the mistakes he made as the King of Wellston and felt John’s rampage as Joker was his own fault. In all honesty, Arlo’s character development was impressive. His views on the social hierarchy—how the world needed ranking and order—were indeed valid.
Blyke also impressed me with his deduction skills. He figured out John’s identity as Joker without anyone needing to tell him. This was the arc where all the major characters discovered John’s secret—including Seraphina! As expected, Seraphina broke down and questioned their close friendship. “WAS EVERYTHING A LIE?” Seraphina wondered.
Remi is officially my favorite character in unOrdinary. I learned a lot from her during the first season. Remi’s private confrontation with John before their season-finale showdown was powerful and insightful into their mindsets. I wished Remi could’ve gotten through to John, but he was too far gone at that point. I understood John’s reasons for wanting to destroy the social hierarchy, but his methods were pure hypocrisy. The fight between John and Remi was inevitable.
The fight scene was drawn incredibly with the lightning. Remi and John’s lightning—blue and black respectively—clashing with each other was immersive. John’s ability to amplify the powers he copied—and do combos with them too—made him an absolute monster on the battlefield. Even with Remi, Arlo, Blyke, and Isen—the Royals of the school—coming at the same time, they couldn’t beat the Joker. The cliffhanger left me absolutely speechless. I highly recommend this Webtoon series. Please read unOrdinary. You won’t regret it. I didn’t.
