unOrdinary "Suspension Arc" (Episode 29 through Episodes 35) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
The “Suspension Arc” challenged John and Seraphina’s friendship, taking place directly after the “Investigation Arc” and during Seraphina’s month-long suspension. It was hard and difficult to see them separated, and how the social hierarchy of this world was doing whatever they could to tear them apart. Then there was Gavin—the bully John threw out the window—from the “Beginning Arc”, who just wanted to take advantage of the situation. Arlo was also still determined to learn John’s secrets and sever his ties with Seraphina.
Why did John Doe defy the social norms at Wellston Private High School?
During this short arc, Seraphina had to deal with her mother back at home, who had expected better from her “perfect” daughter. While Seraphina and John tried to keep in touch using phones, social media, and video games, the people in their lives did whatever it took to prevent them from communicating with each other. Arlo and two unnamed students broke John’s phone, and Seraphina’s mother disconnected Seraphina’s WIFI.
John’s anger grew as a result, making his dialogue bubbles turn black again. He fought back against the powered students. In addition, John lashed out at Remi when she tried to help him—the only person aside from Seraphina who had showed him any kind of sympathy. This was a difficult moment to process. Why can’t everyone be friends?
Episode 35—the closer to the “Suspension Arc”—had an intense scene with John and Arlo on the rooftop. After everything happened in the past few chapters—bullying and phone breaking—John was done and wanted to eat his lunch. Arlo reflected on the social norms, still baffled that John Doe had no fear of the superpowered people. While the audience didn’t get any new information from this entertaining scene, Arlo’s curiosity grew as he wondered what John was like before coming to this school.
Overall, the past seven arcs were short. The character progression had been steady, but the plot had stopped moving during this arc. Based on what I read so far, uru-chan seemed to favor character over plot. Now, that’s my kind of mindset in regards to writing stories. Thanks for reading my journey so far. unOrdinary is a good Webtoon for those into the superhero genre. I would highly recommend it.
