unOrdinary "Project Partners Arc" (Episode 36 through Episodes 39) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
This short arc took place in a flashback to when John and Seraphina were assigned as each other’s partner for a three-part class project. They weren’t best friends yet, but these episodes showed how they eventually warmed up to each other. I also liked how this flashback occurred naturally as Seraphina was studying at home in the present day.
Since getting partnered with John, Seraphina immediately tried to do all the work on the project in order to keep her perfect score and image. However, John insisted on doing his share and that led to him messing up the assignment. A “B-minus” on the first part of the project wasn’t going to help Seraphina maintain her perfect reputation. As a result, John and Seraphina had to communicate better to improve their score for the second part of the project. I thought the gradual build to their close bond was really sweet to witness.
Seraphina and John had a hard time understanding each other throughout this arc. It wasn’t until Seraphina overheard John defend her from two mean girls that she really started to understand how selfless John was. I felt somewhat emotional reading their friendship’s origin story and Seraphina’s changed opinion on John and herself. Seraphina didn’t realize how much she was truly suffering at Wellston Private High School until she met John.
At the end of the arc—episode 39—John and Seraphina finally got an “A” on the last part of the project. John invited Seraphina for drinks at Woaba Boba to celebrate their success, which eventually became their favorite hangout spot. I was so happy reading the ending of this arc when the story shifted back to present day. Seraphina’s character development was such an emotional journey.
Overall, the “Project Partners Arc” was short but essential in learning how John and Seraphina became best friends. It made their current situation—separated from each other due to Seraphina’s suspension—even more heartbreaking. Reading the first 39 episodes in order to reach this flashback story was a good payoff for the time I invested in this series so far. I would definitely recommend reading unOrdinary for how the writer handled John and Seraphina. I love them very much.
JUST LET THEM BE FRIENDS!
