My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Anime Movie Review
Major Spoilers are included in this anime movie review. Please read with caution.
I decided to write an anime movie review on My Hero Academia: Two Heroes because I’m seeing the new movie this upcoming week, and I’m preparing myself to have some fun.
My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a standalone anime movie released in 2018. The design of the movie was the safe bet, being an interesting way to introduce a broader audience to the anime while still fitting into the canon of the series. There are no major spoilers in this movie as far as I could, and some of the anime’s main issues are organically inserted into the movie’s design like All Might’s powers dwindling, and Deku learning to become his successor by mastering One For All.
This movie chronologically takes place between My Hero Academia’s seasons two and three prior to the Camp Training Arc. However, the movie doesn’t require audiences to know what the show’s about and it avoids exposition dumping the series altogether.
The movie gets moving from start to finish, giving what information they can through the other characters showing up. Basically, Deku and All Might are invited to I-Island’s Expo Event with some more U.A. students joining the fun through convenient excuses.
Two Heroes also uses Midoriya as an effective method to explore setting and character like the series does. The audience is able to see the world through Midoriya’s reaction toward the special Quirk inventions, and how all his classmates ended up on I-Island. Using a character rather than an unseen narrator is always the preferred choice.
If the title of the movie is any indicated, the movie heavily relies on Midoriya and All Might’s relationship similar to the first season but deeper into the background. This movie really dove into them at the beginning and end when they first showed up vs climatic ending against the villains. They were separated during the middle act, but everyone had a role to play in order to “save everyone”.
Midoriya and Melissa’s bond was a strong aspect of the movie as well. Melissa’s dream to help heroes without Quirks was an effective character moment to give us understanding on Midoriya’s current mindset in comparison to how he started out Quirkless.
Of course, Two Heroes’ animation is gorgeous. The movie had a beautiful opening with the hawks and beginning with an action-packed scene to showcase all that animation doesn’t hurt either. The score is also amazing and that’s my opinion on the series itself too.
Overall, this was a great debut movie and I’m excited to see the second one coming out this week.
