Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train: “Tomorrow” (Episodes 298 through 301) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 23, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train’s seventeenth story arc: “Tomorrow”. The arc centered around the last day before the final match between Baam and Data Zahard, with Khun completing the grand quest and Data Zahard creating the arena. Honestly, I was blown away with everything that happened in this arc—particularly Baam’s furthered character development.
I had a recent conversation with my Writers’ Group—on September 21, 2020—about “being yourself and not someone else” regarding a student-mentor relationship, so the timing was quite the coincidence. I didn’t realize—until this arc—that Baam had been only copying his mentors’ techniques and never making his own, which factored into his identity crisis and character development. The payoff to his own original move—a Twenty-Fifth Baam Style-Extreme—was incredibly gorgeous.
Being able to learn from the things you read and watch is pretty amazing. I mean, SIU is likely doing the same thing when writing Tower of God based on how I just recently compared his latest arc developments to Naruto, Sword Art Online, and Star Ocean: Til the End of Time. What an admirable writer for being able to improve so much over this past decade while also taking care of himself. I hope your writing break is going well, SIU!
Khun’s Team and Rachel’s Team reconverge with Data Mazino, who request everyone help him destroy the Mirror of the Past. While everyone didn’t want to work with each other, Data Mazino and Hwang—a Big Breeder—blackmailed them with their hostages from both teams. This plan to destroy the Mirror of the Past also brought up a thought-provoking question—a SAO one—about the Data people on the Hidden Floor being actual people, and how they deserve to live their lives outside their original counterparts’ expectations.
I’m glad everyone knows Rachel is Icarus now because that whole thing where she pretended to be someone else was annoying. Rachel pretending to be Icarus and Baam discovering he needed to become truly himself were great contrasts to each other during this short arc. Whether we like it or not, Rachel is an integral part of the story.
The fight scene between Baam and Data Zahard was gorgeously drawn. I loved how Data Zahard had the clear advantage throughout this arc, putting Baam down on defense the entire time. The yellow and blue color scheme blended well throughout the action sequence—although the yellow dominated the blue sometimes, and that likely enhanced Data Zahard’s clear advantage over Baam.
The amazing cliffhanger—Baam retaking the lead in their fight—was breathtaking and like I said earlier regarding the Twenty-Fifth Baam Style-Extreme, it was incredibly gorgeous. Reaching Season 2’s 300th episode was also an awesome milestone to reach, so I’m more than hyped to keep it climbing up the Tower for the next arc!
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! I’ll see you all in my next Tower of God Webtoon review—the eighteenth story arc “Power”.
