Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train: “The Floor of Death” (Episodes 232 through 259) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 18, 2020, I started reading Tower of God Volume 2: The Hell Train’s tenth story arc: “The Floor of Death” and finished on September 20, 2020. Tower of God had tremendous plot momentum during this long arc, with Baam finally learning his background and gradually cutting his emotional ties with Rachel. The Webtoon episodes also started getting longer—due to SIU taking breaks—so that personally affected my pacing with the story. Objectively, having Webtoon episodes that long is great especially with SIU taking hiatuses to recharge.
When everyone arrived on The Floor of Death, Baam and new character Hockney were separated from the group. I enjoyed this aspect, as it allowed Hockney to delve his background and purpose for revisiting The Floor of Death. Hockney’s friendship with his old friend Mata—who journeyed with Baam and Hockney out of old loyalty—was somehow compelling. Another Princess named Garam Zahard also made an appearance in this arc, having a personal history with Anak Zahard—the daughter—and Urek Mazino. I miss Anak Zahard. She needs to come back.
There were many God-tier characters popping up in this arc from Hell Joe, Karaka, White (Hoaqin), and then a Leader of the Ten Great Families—A God among Gods—toward the end of this arc; this Leader called White “a bug” after he absorbed over a million human souls in an attempt to reclaim his final form. White refused to get back up after getting his ass kicked so thoroughly.
Yuri Zahard was finally given screen time during this arc, and the reader was also given a glimpse into her background regarding the Black March and Green April weapons, and how she never ignited either weapon before. I did like how this arc addressed the 13-month weapons again and connecting them to Baam’s destiny. Yuri’s amazing character moment when she managed to ignite both her weapons at the same time was beautiful and dangerous, and her dynamic with Mazino was pretty hilarious.
Urek Mazino’s return was pretty awesome, and his connection with the villain Hell Joe was funny and tragic at the same time. Hell Joe’s character and his strong desire to leave The Floor of Death was quite sympathetic; his love for watching TV and reading comic books was also super relatable and borderline self-aware. I also enjoyed how all the storylines—initially chaotic and disconnected—were eventually weaved together when everyone gained motive to take Hell Joe down, which allowed all the characters to meet up towards the end.
Baam’s feelings for Rachel were addressed in this arc as well, as they were forced to team-up with each other for the “defeat Hell Joe” quest. Baam told Rachel how they were still enemies even when they’re on the same team and that he wasn’t the same weak boy from the cave anymore, which broke his own heart to say. While I hate Rachel’s character—and enjoyed Baam telling her off—I hated Baam feeling bad about it more. How SIU is handling Baam and Rachel’s delicate relationship is low-key brilliant.
Also, another fan-favorite character made a cameo toward the end of this arc! I was completely thrown and so happy when this character appeared. Let’s just say this character is waiting for the turtles to find him.
The downside to this arc was Khun, Androssi, and Wangnan having little to no screen time or character development. While Wangnan makes sense given his situation with Team Rachel and the long game he’s playing with backstabbing her, Khun and Androssi weren’t given opportunities to do much beyond just showing up and admiring Baam’s continuous power-ups. Yes, I know Khun and Androssi love Baam so much, but they’re also brilliant and powerful in their own ways.
Overall, Tower of God is getting closer to its next epic arc. Baam knows his origin story and the reason he was named “Jue Viole Grace”, Rachel is beginning to feel less special and more hated, and more story lore was revealed regarding the 13-month weapons, the Zahard Princesses and their true purpose through Garam Zahard’s background story, and why the Ten Great Families are so interested in Baam, the son of Arlene Grace. The next story arc should be a good one, with another reunion among original characters coming our way!
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
