Tower of God Volume 3: “King of the Dogs” (Episodes 24 through 26) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On October 3, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 3’s seventh story arc: “King of the Dogs”. Something about Tower of God I love and hate at the same time is the investment in other characters. The love comes from getting to know all the characters climbing the Tower and rooting for them to keep going—whatever their reasons may be. The “hate” aspect mostly comes from the hit-or-miss regarding these side-characters like Sachi Faker and Boro.
Volume 3 has done an excellent job on a “soft reboot” with the simplification of the plot, a new world and species, and giving Baam a new goal of saving his master rather than have him chase Rachel through the Tower. This arc delivered a solid arc on Baylord Yama and his position as “King of the Dogs”—something his brother Baylord Doom and the Elder FUG are trying to take away from him. I appreciated the expansion on Baylord Yama’s powers, and why he ultimately will stay above his brothers Doom and Paul.
Baylord Yama’s main strength is fear. Similar to Steelheart from Brandon Sanderson’s The Reckoners book series, Baylord Yama gains absolute invulnerability from anyone who’s scared of him. Baylord Doom knew about this when they fought each before in the flashback, but he couldn’t help but be scared after seeing his “final transformation”.
Baylord Yama has a terrifying fully evolved transformation—something Baylord Doom couldn’t achieve despite being the originator of the canine people—which proved that Yama is the true “King of the dogs”. Baylord Yama had become a fan-favorite rather quickly in these last few Webtoon episodes.
Evankhell and Yu Han Sung were trapped in a never-ending arrow maze—created by the Elder FUG—that was near impossible to escape from. With Yu Han Sung thinking on his feet though, Evankhell burned away certain pathways to open up the specific pathway that would lead them to the Cage. The fire was of course gorgeous—I say this every time in these Webtoon reviews—but it’s so mesmerizing and worth mentioning on a constant basis. I really can’t get enough of that particular artwork.
Side-note: Evankhell is a woman. Yu Han Sung is a man. I noticed the translations get the pronouns wrong once in a while, so I thought I’d clear that up. I’m not sure SIU clarified Evankhell officially yet, but I know he officially clarified Yu Han Sung’s gender when Season 1 concluded.
Now back to the beautiful fire. Apparently, Evankhell possesses a Primeval flame—Yeon Flame—which is why his firepower is on a God-tier level. Khun may also possess the Primeval Flame of healing, so that’s pretty awesome and a good tie-in with what’s been going with Khun resurrecting himself and bringing other people back to life too. I think—hopefully—we’ll get more answers on this at some point in the next couple arcs.
The character dynamic between Evankhell and Yu Han Sung is pretty hilarious too, with how Yu Han Sung can give Evankhell orders despite being lower in rank and power compared to her.
Khun and Rak aren’t getting much screen time either, but I love seeing them run away from Baylord Doom and the other canine people since they have the fang. Also, Rak and Baam briefly teaming up was nice. But, Khun continued running with another canine person to protect the fang. All they seem to be doing is running though, so here’s hoping they get to do something else soon.
Baam was almost turned into a canine person—with Baylord Doom having that ability—but the Elder FUG stopped Doom, having placed a spell on his heart that makes Doom follow his orders or die. Everyone is so obsessed with Baam—except Rachel—but that’s the life of a hero protagonist.
Overall, Tower of God is picking up on the hype! Evankhell and Yu Han Sung have officially arrived in the Cage—ready to face off against the Elder FUG. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! I truly appreciate all your support. Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
