Tower of God Volume 2: The Workshop Battle: “Bet” (Episodes 52 through 55) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On September 6, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Workshop Battle’s fourth story arc: “Bet”. The arc picked up directly where the previous arc—“Devil of the Right Arm”—left off, with the explosion scattering everyone around. Viole ended up with Novick, Ran, and Xia Xia—the rabbit ears woman who orchestrated everything to build Viole’s reputation as a Slayer nominee in FUG.
By the end of this arc, Viole forced Xia Xia to let Novick and Ran join their team because he secretly wanted to protect Khun’s teammates. Viole also assured Novick and Ran—through a private message—that Khun survived the explosion.
Khun did survive, and he learned Viole and Baam were one and the same. He was also coerced into leading Viole’s new team into the Workshop Battle by Hwa Ryun, who confirmed to Khun about Baam’s “death” and his rebirth as “Jue Viole Grace”. Hwa Ryan also passed along the FUG elders’ message that whoever won The Workshop Battle would become Viole’s new teammates; a compromise arranged by Jinsung.
Horyang coming back in this arc—alive and well—was also a relief. I thought he had died during the “Devil of the Right Arm” story arc, but he didn’t. Cassano offered him a chance to join Viole’s new team to find Sophia, the scientist who named them.
Once again, Tower of God subverted the audience’s expectations. I didn’t expect Viole and Khun to switch teammates like that. The switch-up also allowed the Webtoon to have a tighter focus on Khun, who had no experience dealing with Regulars like Wangnan.
Khun interacting with Viole’s teammates was insightful. Throughout the series so far, Khun had only picked the best of the best to have on his team and seeing him struggle to train everyone made this arrangement appear like a test for Khun too. Khun even admitted that he was nervous about The Workshop Battle due to his lack of faith in Viole’s teammates. Can he whip these average Regulars in shape before The Workshop Battle?
From the team’s perspective, they’re also struggling with nervousness about The Workshop Battle. Ja Wangnan is nervous about taking the test without Viole and Horyang—the usual powerhouses on the team—while Yeon Yihwa is worried about losing control of her flame throwing powers without Viole there to stop the potential danger. Even Miseng had her concerns, but Prince tried to make her feel better. The character moments were nice in this arc.
What I enjoyed the most about this arc though was the return of several Volume 1 characters for The Workshop Battle. Rak—the crocodile spear hunter—heard about Khun’s “death” and is making his way to The Workshop Battle too in addition to Leesoo, Anak, and Androssi plus more from the original team. However, they also believe Ju Viole Grace killed Khun and want revenge on the FUG Slayer nominee…
Overall, Tower of God had set the table for The Workshop Battle coming in the next arc, with Khun and his new team starting with a clear disadvantage. I’m looking forward to reading what happens next with everyone! Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower! To the Workshop Battle!
