The Good Place 4x01 "A Girl From Arizona, Part One" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are ahead. This read this episode review with caution.
The season premiere kicked off with an endgame in mind. This show is nearing its end and finding ways to revisit its roots without it feeling forced in the slightest. Eleanor is now in charge, no longer the bad person she used to be when the series began. The fate of the entire human race is in these characters’ ridiculous hands: Eleanor, Tahani, Jason, and Chidi. Janet and Michael are also apart of the team, which is ridiculous considering how this show began.
The Bad Place have sent four humans to torment our original group, which included the first plot twist: one of the humans was disguised as a human, but the demon couldn’t realistically keep up the charade. Shawn was punished, and The Judge declares that the memory-wiped Chidi will be the replacement test subject in experiment. The human that will torture Eleanor. Who else could do the job better?
Michael and Eleanor are given the majority of the spotlight as they sidelined everyone else. Simone from season three though… her denial on the existence of an afterlife provided plenty of comedic moments to satisfy the audience. Jason-Derek-Janet is precious.
Having Jason and Derek in the same scene will be a treasured memory of mine: the killing Derek one most especially. They’re perfect for each other.
Overall, The Good Place settled back into its roots and prepared good writing for their final season. However, the ending is not 100% clear. I wonder if the series will give us definitive answers on their endgame. What does it truly mean to be a “good person”? Can people really change for the better?
Please do not end shamefully like How I Met Your Mother. It’s all I ask from you, The Good Place. Part Two should’ve aired with Part One like last year just saying. Making us wait an extra week is not forking okay.
