Grey's Anatomy 16x01 "Nothing Left To Cling To" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with Caution.
The premise shook up the status quo with interesting ideas. All the answers we wanted from the season 15 cliffhanger were answered and resolved almost immediately. Meredith Grey admitted her guilt in the fraud that got the original three fired (Meredith, Alex, and Richard). Miranda Bailey is still Chief but hates firing her favorite people. Maggie and Jackson broke up after the fog incident that brought Vic from Station 19 into an awesome crossover romance.
Jackson is not dead but definitely hates Maggie. They are broken up over not liking each other, and with all the time jumps (3 one week laters, maybe four), Jackson and Vic are still not ready to be together as they got issues to work out. Maggie’s upset over their potential romance because she treated Chief Ripley but also because she doesn’t want her ex-boyfriend to be happy? This was my least favorite storyline fallout, but Jackson being set-up with Vic does seem better.
Alex and Richard are doing a team-up at a different hospital. I’m glad the show didn’t find a way to BS their jobs back. Alex’s season 15 era as the Chief is coming back into play, and Richard Webber will be there too having Alex’s back. This storyline is easily my favorite one because it’s so refreshing and a good change of direction… away from Grey-Sloan Memorial.
Alex DeLuca and Meredith Grey are still together. Meredith is doing community service for what she did, but the Board is trying to take away her license. This could spell trouble for the upcoming season. Plus, I think Zola and the other kids need more screentime. They deserve it.
Teddy and Owen are together with child. Teddy’s hormones are everywhere, she broke up with Tom, who’s the Chief of Chiefs now, and Owen was not being very helpful. His actions in this episode (the whole “milk” you) prove he’s still the worst at times. However, Owen sold his old house so he and Teddy can start over in a new house that Amelia didn’t live in.
Speaking of Amelia, she’s gradually becoming better and bisexual. She tried to get Carina DeLuca into a threesome with her and Link. However, Carina mistook the visit as pertaining to Amelia’s pregnancy. Wow. Carina found Amelia’s tumor in season 14 and now it’s a pregnancy in season 16. These two are something else. Also, I’m glad Amelia is being more open about her bisexuality. That’s progress. But more importantly Amelia is pregnant with Link’s child. Drama has elevated to the next level. Do we dare entertain the idea of Owen Hunt being the father?
Overall, season 16 had a good start. It introduced interesting ideas that put the season 15 cliffhangers behind us. Jackson didn’t die, he saved a life and broke up with Maggie. Meredith wasn’t going to jail. However, her medical license is in trouble. Alex and Richard are working at a different hospital, and Jo… she’s such a gentle soul.
Jo Karev is terrified that Alex won’t love her anymore, but Alex proposes to her all over again, wanting to marry her for real no matter what. These two are the best. Their romance will have challenges, but they’ll make it through. Thanks for reading, everyone. See you next week!
