Doom Patrol 1x06 "Doom Patrol Patrol" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
We need to talk about Doom Patrol. The episode title itself should’ve been enough, but I couldn’t resist. This show is bonkers and getting bonkier with each episode. While the plot of defeating Mr. Nobody tends to go nowhere in the best way possible, the character journeys are amazingly well-written, especially in regards to Larry and Rita this week.
The team meets the Doom Patrol, the original superhero group from the 1950’s. This is a good take on self-awareness, and how being superheroes has terribly consequences. The flashback story involves Rita and Mento, the psychic and leader of the Doom Patrol. Apparently, Jane was an old inmate at the house too.
After the original Doom Patrol group was defeated by Mr. Nobody in their last mission, Niles abandoned them and tossed them aside so he could move on with his life, which makes what he almost did to Jane awful. The episode’s genre mixture of X-Men and The Shining was wonderful… and being self-aware of how the creepy house resembled was perfect.
Cyborg / Robotman / Silas was a good subplot. The show is gradually establishing Crazy Jane as the star of the series, but this story was engaging too. Silas and Cliff (Robotman) argued over being parents, then Silas and Cyborg made amends or an understanding on the mission. The cliffhanger involving Bumper’s place as Cliff’s daughter is going to get dramatic or violent or both.
Overall, what a sad episode but emotionally moving to see Larry and Rita move on from their pasts. Doom Patrol is a show everyone needs to get into.
